None of you are totally correct, but Ashley Hill is closest. I'll give the answer, because I'm not around for a while now - it's that Mercury Communications opened it's first non-British Telecom payphones at Waterloo Station on 27th July 1988. I'm happy for Ashley Hill to take the platform if he wishes.

In the early 80s, Class 50s used to do a strange working - early hours of a Saturday morning a class 50 would arrive (light engine) at Leicester, take on fuel at LR depot, then return to Birmingham with parcels vans. Apart from B'Ham New St, these were my first sightings of Class 50s.
One of them was 50.041 Bulwark.

50041 quite correct. It was arriving into Pad with the 2135 sleeper from Penzance.

This has to be the superb Barlow train shed for St Pancras Station. The ironwork was done by Butterley Co. (Derbyshire)

What is the origin of the nickname 'Ped' for Class 31s?
I think it's short for pedestrian, just slow then for the origin?

Leicester spotters called them 'Goyles' but I have heard them called 'Peds'.
31s were always pretty reliable (at Leicester anyway!) so I was surprised to hear the reason they were called Peds related to their pace ie. like a pedal car.

We also called them Goyles, derived from Gargoyle, due to their less than beautiful appearance.
And yes, Ped comes from Pedal Car, with which they were considered to have an equivalent lack of power.
Goodness knows how bad they were as the original Class 30.
