Well I am going to think outside the box here and suggest that Southampton is wrong. Dover makes sense because Dover- Calais and Dover- Ostende (I did Dover to Ostende so that sort of makes sense.)

So I will go with Dover - but then if Southampton is wrong the only other suggestion that makes sense is Weymouth.

Brockenhurst wasnt it ? Not sure if it was intended to be a service to Brockenhurst for the New Forest or a convenient start point covering the south around Southampton. Having said Brockenhurst I now struggle to think where they would load up

You are indeed correct with Brockenhurst, the cars were loaded on the car flats in the dock siding, now where the extended
downside car park is then they were shunted onto the rear of the coaches in the up loop on a Saturday and Sunday evening.
Occasionally the train arrived from Kensington with the cars the wrong way round and had to be reversed off the car flats.
Only one did the Dover cars arrive in error and this meant a special train dispatched to Dover and vice versa.
I shunted this train on a number of occasions during its existence.

So both Graham H and GRALISTAIR got one correct answer so i'll let you gents sort out who asks the next question.

Well done Cowley. Thats the one. Anyone old enough will remember how dire the A30/A303 were so this service ran for a few years in the summer to help reduce the problem. Interesting read as it was steam hauled and consisted of just 3 coaches, one of which was a restaurant car plus a number of GUVs. Over to you...........
