The Highland Railway planned branch lines on the Scottish Mainland to Lochend, Cromarty, Ullapool, Scrabster, Scrabster, Portskerra, Gairloch, and another settlement on the West Coast. Which one?

Laxford bridge

Correct! Yes, they were going to build a line from Lairg to Laxford Bridge. Your floor.

Scourie?? (What were these people on?)

The Highland Railway wanted to open up the west coast. However...Laxford Bridge????

Ullapool sort-of makes sense. It's a port, the largest place between Thurso, Portree, Stornoway, and Tain in each direction. It serves Stornoway by ferry. If it weren't for the terrain between there and Garve, it would be a nailed-on opening by Rail Rush standards (though not today, obviously).

Lochinver was also a bid to open up the west coast, as was Gairloch. You can sort-of see their point...after all, the fishing industry back then was much more widespread and lucrative. Trains carried the fish to the big cities quickly, so lines to these places helped them get ahead, even if they still served practically nowhere.

But...Laxford Bridge??? OK, Scourie and Kinlochbervie kinda make more sense, but...LAXFORD BRIDGE???

Unsurprisingly, none of these schemes went ahead. Especially as they wanted to give Laxford Bridge, Lochinver, Gairloch and Ullapool separate branch lines - if you really want to reach those places, then build a line from Garve to Lochinver or something, or from Achnasheen to Ullapool so you can combine to of them. Don't drag four different lines across a wilderness with basically no population. Otherwise Oykel Bridge and Aultguish would have been major stations.

Ugh. That's given me a headache.

Where is this viaduct/bridge.

The arches of the bridge spring from halfway up the tall piers to form near-hemispheres. The rounded ends of the piers are extended upwards and finished in small, crenellated towers, which also adorn the stone parapets. More pronounced, half-hexagonal refuges top the abutments, marking the approach.
The whole was designed to blend with the architecture of the town, and intended for completion in 18xx. However, the near-complete viaduct collapsed on 11 March 18xx and took three and a half years to rebuild; the incomplete railway line was opened in October 18xx nonetheless.

Quite correct.

Preston is the midway point between London and Glasgow.

Please set another question.

Is it?

NRT table 65 has the distance as 401.25, and Preston at 209.

If I have provided incorrect information, then my question becomes null and void, so someone else can set a new question.

Which passenger railway was built without an Act of Parliament, had its only fatal accident on opening day, and remains open today?
