From Chester you can fit in Mid Cheshire line - Stockport - Denton - Philips Park Curve - Brewery Junction - Rochdale - Todmorden Curve - Blackburn - Preston

If I may be allowed a second attempt, you could extend your Mid Cheshire suggestion by going from Northenden Junction via the freight-only line over Hazel Grove, then Chinley, the Hope Valley, Sheffield, Barnsley, Penistone, Huddersfield, Bradley & Bradley Wood Junctions, Sowerby Bridge, then via Copy Pit......

Very well then - this has taken longer than I had expected, considering the wealth of route knowledge on this forum, I think I should declare open floor.




The route I had was:

Waterloo – Sheepcote Lane Chord – Kensington Olympia – Willesden Jct – Camden Road Central Jct – Cedar Jct – onto HS1 – Ebbsfleet – Gravesend – Faversham – Margate – Ramsgate – Dover Priory – Folkestone* – Ashford – Tonbridge – Redhill – Guildford – Reading – Basingstoke – Southampton – Salisbury – Exeter St David’s – Taunton – Weston Super Mare – Bristol Temple Meads – Maindee East Jct – Maindee North Jct – Hereford – Shrewsbury – Chester – Altrincham – Stockport – Manchester P – Bolton – Preston – Lancaster – Carnforth – Barrow – Carlisle – Kilmarnock – Shields Jct – High Street Jct – Bellgrove – Cowlairs West Jct – Cowlairs East Jct – Lenzie – Falkirk Grahamston – Edinburgh – Newcastle – King Edward Bridge North Jct – King Edward Bridge East Jct – Sunderland – Northallerton – York – Leeds – Sheffield – Derby – Peterborough – Ely – Stowmarket – Ipswich – Colchester – Stratford – Carpenter’s Road North Jct – Willesden Jct – Kensington Olympia – back to Waterloo.

Come to think of it, that would probably make for an interesting discussion in a dedicated thread...?


*Dover - Folkestone will re-open once the works are finished and therefore can be counted as valid for a route.

I'm afraid that you're missing a station on both the Maryport & Carlisle Railway and the Cleator & Workington Junction Railway. Admittedly I'd forgotten about the C&WJR, only thought about the line to Brigham.

Re the "northern" (CWJR) route, the plot thickens: I now discover two fresh locations between Great Broughton, and Seaton (Cumberland): Buckhill Colliery Halt and Camerton Colliery Halt. Re the "southern" route: Broughton Cross station, west of Brigham? I'd thought Broughton Cross to be freight-only.

They said Margaret Thatcher hated trains, just a thought but do you think that pacer trip had something to do with her aversion?

Right, a certain type of BR Intercity coach was fitted with a folding/jack knifing type of exterior door, these were also AFAIK the first BR hauled stock to be fitted with airline style seats with fold down tables, what were they?
