Where are the southernmost and northernmost operational railways in the world - that carry passengers.

I watched a programme about that Russian line not long ago - extreme railways or some such title.

During the cold war in the late 50's the US, concerned that the railroads would be targeted in the early stage of a Soviet attack, came up with a bizarre emergency replacement system. What was the final incarnation delivered in 1961 called and what world record did it achieve and still holds.

Here's a hint. It was a road vehicle but followed US railroad practices and used similiar prime movers.

Yes thats the one. Nearly 600ft long and with the ability to be made longer it was the longest road vehicle ever built. The sole remaining gas-turbine/electric power car can be found outside Yuma. Ultimately it was the rapid development of the heavy lift helicopter that made the army abandon the idea. Your floor.

I'll take it.

Which rail company made several attempts to reach Inverness from the east before the Grouping? And which tried to keep them out?

Sorry, had forgotten about this quiz.
Deleted.

The GNoSR, with the HR trying to keep them out?

This is correct. Passengers from Aberdeen or stations thereafter would be pulled by an HR loco from Keith Junction (from GNoSR to HR), but once GNoSR reached Elgin (via both Craigellachie and the coast), they refused to stop the best trains at Keith. The HR wouldn't take any carriages from the Craigellachie line, and only one from the coastal line. The GNoSR tried several times to get running powers from Elgin to Inverness (even to Perth at one point), and even once tried to build their own line. The GNoSR never reached Inverness.

Your floor.

A prototype type 3 diesel locomotive was constructed during 1962/3, it had a B-B wheel configuration and was powered by Rolls Royce engines.

It was withdrawn/scrapped during 1967 after completing no more than 400 miles during testing with BR, who built this one off loco, what was its number and what was the type of transmission installed?

Without going back to the issue of British railways illustrated or railway bylines (which is where I read about it), I can't remember anymore about it. May have been hydraulic as I think there was some mention of west Germany either as a market or some technical issue memtioned in the article.

Would their original SR numbering have been 1,2 & 3, becoming 15201/2/3 under BR ownership, because their withdrawal from service was as early as 1964 they obviously would not have received a TOPS classification therefore all I could suggest is 0-6-0 350hp diesel shunter?

A typical commuter-belt part of north-west England

You are correct with the British Rail numbers which was that part of the conundrum so you can set the next one.

Incidentally, I have some old notes in my archives that refer to these locomotives as having a British Rail classification of D3/12 then D3/9A
