They were prefixes, not suffixes, and they were:
L = Reading ( London division )
P = Plymouth
C = Cardiff
B = Bristol
I too was first flummoxed by the conundrum which stated suffixes instead of prefixes. However, in the pre-1970's period, I have traced five, not four of these.
B = Bristol
C = Cardiff
L = London Area
P = Plymouth
S = Swansea
Where in the UK was it possible until 2011 to ride in a thumper DEMU & one set is still in departmental use.
