I too was first flummoxed by the conundrum which stated suffixes instead of prefixes. However, in the pre-1970's period, I have traced five, not four of these.

C = Cardiff
L = London Area
P = Plymouth
S = Swansea

Whoops, got my suffixes and prefixes mixed up, sorry . Peter got the 4 I was looking for as I'd forgotten about S, which Paul comments on. I'll leave it to sort out between you who sets the next question.

At the emd of their lives they were all at Inverness depot & were used on the Inverness-Kyle line. The two oldest were repainted in original colours and it was these used on the services, one of them is now at the Lakeside & Haverthwaite, not sure of the other.

1. Doubtful possibility-- Unit 1001 occasionally worked between Hastings and Ashford. A remember a few years ago I caught it on that line instead of the failed class 171..
2. Another possibility- Are you referring to the broad gauge "thumper" unit on Northern Ireland Railways..?

2 is correct. NIR class 80, one unit mainly consisting of power cars is on sandite duties
