Uckfield? Scrap Crawley that only moved once. I think Uckfield is on its third station now.

As I am away from my PC until Sunday evening attending Erith Model Railway Club Exhibition I shall reveal the answer to no. 2

It was Lewes
The first station in Friars Walk closed in 1857.
The second station closed in 1889 when the present station opened.
The first two stations were on a sharply curving loop line across the site of the present car park and part of the route is now a nature trail. It was in use for freight traffic until the late 1960s.

I offer the next turn to "ageofthetra" as he answered the first part of the question correctly.

An electrified London Southern Region line used to sometimes need to diesel haul its EMU's in normal passenger service.
1) What line
2) diesel loco nearly always used
3) Why was it needed & why it is no longer?

Not the one I was looking for. The loco is correct but it pulled the EMU's as opposed to normal loco hauled stock. It is also a branch line.

Mid Kent Line was often flooded at Clock House.
The EMUs were loco hauled through the flooded section.
Many years ago the stream at Clock House was "boxed" into a culvert which prevented further flooding.

That's it. The chaffinch brook was a regular cause of flooding until the late 60's & EPB's were hauled by 33's on many occasions when the line flooded at Clock House. The culverting finally cured the problem though the steep climb up from Clock House to New Beckenham still causes adhesion issues to this day Your floor

As I have had no guesses or feedback I will give you a clue...

The ticket is not numbered--the numbers have been deliberately omitted ..why???

Was it a complimentary ticket for some reason, therefore need not have been accounted for?

OK - I'll try again:-

Was it a "test" ticket to be proof-read by the company before the printer started to print the production run?

Thank-you for your hint.

It just goes to show you see what you expect to see - I'd examined that ticket closely and never noticed there was no number.

Which Yorkshire Branch line, designed to serve the west side of a conurbation but by a circuitous route from the centre was temporarily closed as a wartime measure in 1917, only to succumb to permanent closure to passenger traffic as early as 1927, due to tramcar competition?

Yes. Correct. :D
The Halifax High Level Railway, or, as you say, the St Paul's Branch. It took about 30 minutes from St Paul's to Halifax centre and involved a reversal at Holmfield. The tramcar could do the journey directly in 10 minutes! No wonder it closed to passenger traffic so early!

As you have directed, it is now open floor.

Considering a move to Memphis
What is the longest stretch of 4 track main line in the UK, where it is not possible to cross between the fast and slow lines (or vice versa) ?

i.e. the longest distance between crossovers

[ NB you may wish to include the distance in your answer, so I can easily compare with the answer I have ]

Do you include the approx. 12 miles between Ashford and Continental Jn.
There 4 adjacent tracks- 2 for Eurostars and 2 for domestic trains.

Which former GN line [now closed], was nicknamed "The Alpine Route" because of its gradients?
