Eastern Counties Railway ?

As you were the first to answer and the ECR first opened in 1839 I will award you the correct answer.
The Northern & Eastern Railway was also correct in opening the following year.

The lines they built between London and Colchester/ Bishops Stortford were later absorbed into the Great Eastern Railway.

Both were isolated tracks within the confines of the harbour.

I have been asked to clarify this situation.

The Holyhead Breakwater railway (which led to the quarry) was converted to standard gauge in 1911. However, another (unconnected) railway in Holyhead carried on as broad gauge after that date.

If you google "Holyhead Breakwater Railway" you will find the answer in the first 50 hits.

Incidentally, can anyone give me any information on what locos were used on the Holyhead Breakwater prior to the 2 class 01s ? Or indeed give a date when the 01s arrived there ? [ They were initially allocated to Stratford ]

The station was at Redstone Hill, in the Redhill/Reigate area, and was built specially for Prince Albert when he laid the foundation stone of the chapel at the Philanthropic Society's farm/penal colony.

Open for just one day really in 1849 - 9 June I think

Which narrow gauge railway and what was its gauge, carrying both passengers and freight, opened in 1877/1878 and ran for a distance of 32 miles, with gradients of 1 : 36 in places. It ceased to carry passengers in 1933, after it was severely disrupted by strike action, but the final part of the railway remained open until 1950.
