Ok been a few days now. The answer is the Trans Canada Highway 1. A section through the Rockies is on the trackbed of Big Hill on the Trans Canadian Railroad. Big Hill was the scence of many spectacular runaways and in its early days up to 8 locos would be needed to get a train over it . Open Floor.

While the stunned stationmaster was still thinking about this, they quickly departed.

Who was the Copley Hill driver, and who was his now more-well-known secondman, who dined-out on this story?

The railwayman concerned has written autobiographical railway books and had articles published in railway magazines on his life and reminiscences.

The driver concerned was an Alf Cartwright of Copley Hill, but he reciter of the tale was a certain R. H. N. Hardy - the famous railwayman and speaker.

If you haven't read his autobiographical books - "Steam in the Blood" and "Railways in the Blood" you've a treat in store!

Which EU countries have no scheduled passenger train services?

Well there are no railways at all in Cyprus or Malta. So I would reckon they are a good starting point.

Which site of a now-closed city station is marked by a wagon lift?

I think the ornamental gates on Shoreditch High St and part of the Braithwaite viaduct remain standing as a memorial to Bishopsgate station, but, as far as I know, no wagon lift. Sorry.

This station was in the North of England.

The one I have in mind is all that remains of a station complex long closed and demolished.

And, although it's in the North of England, it's not as far north as Scotland!

Which was the first country outside North America and Europe to have a railway built? Now sadly unused due to the ineptitude of its present government. (This is a proper "modern" railway with metal tracks etc as opposed to any sled type or wooden wagon way)

I want to say Cuba. As I know there was (maybe still is but as you say out of use) a railway between Havana and Bejucal. I'm pretty sure it was the first railway in South America, but I am uncertain as to weather it was the first railway outside Europe and North America.

What's the connection between SAR 25 class locomotive and Beaufort west registered cars?

I remember reading something in a book a while ago about the SAR. I'm sure that there was a sub class 25NC, but the 25 class locos also had tenders known as CZ tenders.
So I would submit that Beaufort West registered cars have either NC or CZ as the office identifier contained somewhere in the registration number.

Virtually correct. The class 25 tenders were CZ tenders, which is also the car reg. for Beaufort west, which were where the locos were based. The 25NC tenders were given a completely different tender (EW).
