Long shot.... does the designer of the HST styling ( the one who got honoured last year; I've forgotten his name! ) live in Somersert and did he also do design work for the RN on the type of ship of which HMS Somerset is one?

I'll give it, the Somerset thing was a little red herring, it was just so I had a link between HSTs and HMS Somerset.

But yes, both the HST and Type 23 Frigates (plus a heap of other marine uses, including a fleet of submarines) are/were powered by the Valenta.

I think its some railway wholly owned by a mining company, and thus became part of the National Coal Board in 1947.

I think it's a line near South Shields, but I can't remember the name of it.

That is a good one, I was not aware of that. The one I am thinking of was directly operated by the state rather than a local authority and although the passengers did not pay they would probably rather have not been there!

Ok, to the best of my knowledge only one complete class of standard gauge steam loco has survived into preservation. What is it? By class I mean more than one as opposed to a one off or prototype which survived e.g Duke of Gloucester.

I would have said the SECR P class, but there were 6 built and only 4 survive as far as I know.
