There is still one wooden escalator in situ, albeit not in use, on the London Underground. At which station will you find it?

In 1853 the Shrewsbury & Chester Railway appointed a new Locomotive Superintendent, who was soon also to be responsible for the locomotives of the Shrewsbury & Birmingham Railway as the two fleets were pooled. He later went on to higher things. Who was he?

I mention elsewhere the use of the Franco-Crosti Boiler system, particularly with regard to the BR 9F versions. I've found from the web site referred to in that topic that there were five European countries (apart from Great Britain) that used this system - can you name them, please?
As a bonus, one of these countries had a project to build a version with the wheel arrangement of 2-4-4-2 + 2-8-8-2 + 2-4-4-2 for another (Eastern) European country - do you know which countries were involved in this, please? (A clue: it never happened!)

Sorry, but I must dispute that answer. Annie Winter - who passed-out at Waterloo in the Spring of 1982 and later transferred to Salisbury - was BR's first female driver. The late Karen Harrison - with whom I had the privilege of working when I was at Aylesbury (1988-91) and she was at Marylebone - was the second....or possibly third.

Can I just ask - have the posters that have appeared about Karen Harrison at several stations recently got the wrong date on? I'll have to have a look next time I'm in London, but I'm pretty sure they state she became a driver in 1979?

I'm not 100% certain, but I think Karen may have become a Driver's Assistant/Second Person in 1979.

A look at her entry on Wikipedia does, although few dates are given, suggest that Karen Harrison must have been a Driver’s Assistant earlier. However, Annie Winters might have been appointed Driver first due to the way things work.

I think that #15,194 that you set is still the question and it remains unanswered. It is that there is a disagreement about the solution to #15,188.

Apologies for the delay in coming back to this question. Although unfortunately I can't do a quote, there was a thread in March 2017 on RM Web entitled 'Female Drivers'. The consensus on there seemed to be that although the late Karen Harrison was the first female traction trainee to be appointed, she was still a Driver's Assistant at Old Oak Common when Annie Winter was appointed as a Driver at Waterloo in April 1983....having previously been a D/A at Norwood Junction. However, for the sake of keeping the peace and moving the quiz along, I'm happy to let things lie.
