Highgate: Cockermouth, Keswick & Penrith Ry. (also featured in your last Saturday's question)
St. Thomas Cross: Whitehaven, Cleator & Egremont Ry.
Defiance: GWR, Plymouth area I think -- South Devon, anyway

Thanks. It does seem that the railway historical atlases -- both Ian Allan, and Jowett's -- are on the whole, not good on featuring such "Platform" stopping-places; maybe because a fair number of "Platforms" were opened decidedly late in the day -- sometimes, long after the opening of the lines they were on?

Next question:

A town in Ireland -- known before turn of 19th / 20th centuries, by a different name from that which it now bears -- has over time, played host two to different railway lines. One was a conventional, fairly short branch of a bigger system, terminating at the town concerned, and abandoned in the early 1960s. The other -- physically connecting with the branch, at our town -- was nominally independent; it had a short operating life, and an unfortunate fate thereafter.

Please identify the town and its whereabouts in Ireland. Furnishing also, would be gratifying: of the town's old name; and of a brief outline of the ill-fated "independent" railway's sad story.

No. The former name -- superseded in pre-Irish-Free-State days -- was "less, not more, Irish".

The town is Birr - previously Parsonstown. The railway is the Parsonstown & Portumna Bridge which, after a brief impecunious existence, closed down in the 1870s and was stolen piece by piece over the next few years.
