That'll be on two levels. The fact it's a pair of power cars, and that they're being used as locos.

Indeed  The irony of the history of the ECML traction is not lost in this move. Then again, we’ve seen a number of 33s rescuing 50s on pres lines too.

They're inanimate objects which don't have feelings, so I'd bet you're right. Thanks for taking a tongue in cheek comment so seriously though
My comment wasn’t serious either!

They’ve escaped from Ely before…

Which is the longest HST set ever run as a 2+11*. The 36-way control jumpers were connected so the two power cars were working in multi.

* As a classic HST with two power cars on a set of trailers; so excluding rescues with two sets coupled together etc.

Thanks for that, I was wondering about them being in multi or not as from sad experience I know how gutless a single power car could be on 8 let alone 11

That is what a generational change of attitude does. At one time a 2200ish hp diesel loco would be regarded as a quite respectable type 4 viz a viz the Swindon and NBL B-Bs. Then class 56 58 59 60 66 67 68 69 and 70 came along with 3000+ hp units and tipped the balance.
The only reason a HST powercar is "gutless" is because it was never designed with field diverts like a conventional loco.

I don't know about 'generational changes of attitude', all I know is the experience of actually driving them, in the early 2000s we had fleet wide problems at MML and virtually every set was running with one power car shut down, a double Nottingham for example was suffering at least a 15 minute loss on every trip, stress for the passengers, stress for the traincrew and stress for the drivers, no doubt stress for the signallers as well, gutless would have been one of the kindest descriptions during that period

They would have been hauling two of 020, 026 & 152 as far as I'm aware, I understand they can only deal with two units at a time at Kirkdale
Thanks mate, I have posted in the 777 thread as well :)

Saw this earlier passing through Starcross.

I was on the other side of estuary, so it looked odd, not a GWR or XC service anyway!

If you're at Starcross tomorrow around 1443 & 1551 you should see two XC sets going through Chaddesden bound with the RA power cars

The RA power cars worked two sets of off lease XC Mk3s yesterday (Saturday)

43468 & 43480 on 1358 5Z25 Laira T&RSMD to Chaddesden reportedly hauling 42378, 42373, 42376, 45004, 42372, 42368, 45001, 42371 & 44072

43465 & 43484 on 1436 5Z26 Laira T&RSMD to Chaddesden reportedly hauling 41193, 45003, 42366, 44052, 45005, 42369, 42290, 45002 & 42234

They then worked todays 1200 5Z25 and 1650 5Z26 Chaddesden to Barrow Hill LIP, I see that the social media differences of opinion continue with both Mexico and Nigeria claimed as the destination for the coaches and that the ship "Panthera J" is worth following after its arrival at Great Yarmouth, due on monday morning
