I meant the guard of course to check tickets. You're right though, a driver could do it too and other rail staff not gainfully employed if there are no actual trains running, I'm sure checking tickets wouldn't be too onerous?
Without wanting to sound like a 1970s trade unionist who believes in demarcation for its own sake (which, despite my avatar, I assure you I'm not), we have enough problems with people who don't know what they're doing checking tickets as it is.

What is the position if you are boarding a RRB at a station with no ticketing facilities, for example Heart of Wales line , and want to purchase a ticket for the journey?

You won't be able to until you arrive at a station or train with facilities, much the same as if you'd boarded a train at the same point.

Some of GAs finest are out in force today. Nobody is getting onto any RR bus without a valid ticket and on arrival at Ipswich barriers are in operation.

Unusual!

Of all the times I've used the GA bus replacement services on a Saturday, usually from Newbury Park, I've never seen a ticket check take place...

This was at Norwich which has far more revenue resources. The engineering work is between here and Ipswich this weekend.

I've only seen a ticket check on GA once and that was a jobsworth driver who sent some passengers back to the ticket office and then left 30 seconds later leaving them behind.

Between Cambridge and Royston which has had bus replacements at weekends for months due to the works at Cambridge South but I''ve never seen tickets checked.
