I have heard that this pair is coming back from next week due to Ditton effectively ‘swapping’ its London Gateway and Felixstowe services - the London gateway service now runs in the timings of the other Felixstowe to Ditton so seems to be leaving it clear for 4L89 and 4M88 to return.

What exactly do you mean by this? It’s still in the timetable. It was activated and then cancelled today!
I have seen the official Freightliner loco/traincrew diagrams - 4M88 is one of many Felixstowe paths
That's perfectly normal - if a train is activated exactly 3 hours before its departure time,

I can see today that 4M88 was cancelled at 05:46 today, which is over 3 hours before departure time. Surely it has to be activated first as well?
It's not unheard of for TOPS staff to activate paths in error, particular where recent changes have occurred.

Flickr seems to suggest that a Watford-Tonbridge stone train was running at least as recently as February 2025

My non-Italian sources tell me that 60 047 sat down at Hall Royd Junction and has now been there for more than five hours. The driver has been relieved and there is allegedly a 1Z99 en route from Doncaster....although I can't find it on Open Time Trains. Absolutely nothing running on the Calder Valley....so it doesn't look as though single line working has been instituted. There's a 9E20 sitting at Smithy Bridge on the Down. Are TPE diverting via the Calder Valley this week?
