The gushing write up suggests the sun shone out of this trespassers arse. At least the to55er won't do it again, stupid boy.

I personally have no sympathy for tresspassers. If they're stupid enough to go on the line then they deserve to be picked up with a sponge.

If someone who's old enough and responsible for themself wants to go play on the railway, I say let them; it's natural selection at work.

I have little sympathy for him. He trespassed on a railway and got what was coming to him.

He screwed up and paid the ultimate price. No amount of sneering will change that. I don't see any newspapers or journals blaming the railway, they are all saying he was trespassing.

A young lad has still died.

I totally agree.

He may have been trespassing, but remember every time a trainspotter goes past the magic line at the end of a platform that's trespass too.

He died for ****s sakes. You can wish that on anyone, and so what he trespassed on a railway. Is it your railway? I think not.

At least the gushing of the media report serves one purpose, they are not deliberately bracketing trespassers as the hoodie and hoodlums alone. It serves to point out that it doesn't matter who you are, it's what you do.

The article mentions he was out with a group of friends. Now with hime being 16, obviously drink shouldn't have played a part, but being as he's a 6th former (I was once) and the culture and attitude we have towards drinking, I fear it was a factor in both the decision to trespass and the unfortunate slip that cost him his life.

As for the 'dead and deserved it' sentiment of some people, I can't agree with you. Do you always cross the road at a crossing, and wait for the green man too. We all take calculated risks in life, despite our knowledge, others pay more of a price that's all.

Very odd attitute to have I must say, I thought you worked on the railway in some way?

Tresspass isnt a trivial matter that should be shrugged off, it not only puts the tresspassers life in danger, it also puts in danger the lifes of those that may have to go out searching the area for them.

It causes untold misery when one gets killed, from family and freinds to staff directly affected and those that have to clean it up. It costs the railways £millions a year and gives greif to passengers who are either stuck on the train concerned (or behind it) or stuck on a platform somewhere when the job gets stopped.

Tresspass is also extremly highly linked to vandalism which brings it own problems.

while some seem ok to call the lad rude names and blame him, know one knows what happened, tha ammount of times you see passengers hop down to cross to a different platform is stagering although ive only seen it once on the southern but lots on the midland region, burgess hill platforms are not the widest in the world we can only assume what happened, but someone paid the ultimate price which is tragic. his friends will of seen it happen and believe me the state of a person coming off the dc rail aint pretty. i think some people should think before posting, what if his friends or parents read this it makes you wonder what they might feel.

Some people on this Forum are certainly as you describe this young 16 year old who lost his life by being electricuted. There are not enough facts to bear judgement. In my experience as a rail worker I have seen many enthusiasts blatanly tresspasing on the railway, if one of these tripped and fell and died as a result would he or she be a to55er as well? I think your attitude and the attitude of other people on here would be different and it is a shame that you are allowed to post such negative comments, maybe as rail enthusiasts you could form a voluntry group to maybe go around the schools and youth clubs to ensure such youths are well aware of the dangers of the railway, especially electrified lines? However I feel that most of you would sooner be bashing, number crunching or tresspassing to get that elusive photograph.

Regarding my original post, I actually felt angry reading the news article cited. So many of these stories relate to either uneducated, ignorant youths intent on vandalism or those using the railway as a shortcut, and that is what I expected to read (and would have quietly sat back thinking 'so what').

That an apparently well educated young man and his friends should choose to treat the railway (with lethal third rail) as a playground is beyond me and the fact remains is that if they hadn't, he would still be alive.

Well, clearly Network Rail's ongoing anti-tresspass and vandalism capaigns are somewhat ineffective. But, it's good to see that such incidents can act as a catalyst for further change - see http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/7809519.stm. Perhaps NR should think about redesigning the pictogram of someone being electrocuted and rephrasing the words 'danger of death' which are widely found across the electrified network.

On the subject of my own demise, if it occurs though stupidity, thoughtlessness or recklessness on my part, carry on and abuse my name, I shall deserve it. Unless of course you feel sympathetic towards such 'avoidable accidents', too many of which have further unfortunate consequences, including the loss of other innocent and blameless lives.

It is tragic, whilst no one can condone what has happened, I find it more galling that he went to a 22K per annum school. My hope is that the tragedy reinforces the railways dangers as a dangerous industry. I sincerely hope that the staff involved are well and back to work ASAP.

Throwing a member of this forum in front of a HST will do very little to reinforce the anti trespass message and come on, the admins have enough of a job as it is to not be clearing out a HST, a dead member and your large train set out of the Creche <D

And, this lad was 16, hardly a "kid" and it is irrelevant that she can't be with him 24 hours - you wouldn't expect that! Yes, he should have known better, but he should have been brought up better - and that comes from the parents.


Of course I feel sorry for him, and I'd not wish it on anyone. I'm sure no-one on here would want it to happen to anyone.

Those on here who advocate the death penalty for trespassing on the railway - did you never do anything a tad unwise when you were 16? Would being killed for it have been OK?

I am just sickened by the response of some on here. They really need to grow up. This was a tragic accident, and my heart goes out to his parents.

Whilst what you say is correct, I think Dennis has been unfairly 'mauled' for making the very valid point that:- 1) the media, once again, make this person out to be 'one of the good guys', instead of the stupid prat he, and his mates, obviously were, and 2) there is an element on this forum who, whenever a comment of this nature IS made, seem to turn immediately into 'bleeding heart liberals'.

Remeber all the who-ha when the grafitti moron got mown down by an LU train at Barking? THAT almost developed into civil war on this, and other, forums.

Unfortunately, in this instance, the victim had received all the 'benefits' that a private education can bring. 'Common sense and respect for the property of others' was obviously NOT on the curriculum!

Sure, we all sympathise with his friends, relatives and the like, but these are the very people who may have contributed to the attitude and outlook which got him into such a dangerous situation in the first place.

Again, the REAL victims are the driver and his family, plus the members of the emergency services who have to deal with the aftermath of the incident, not to mention finally US, the taxpayers, who pick up the bill for the cost of this clean up.

To be fair, to have any respect for the family, the media wouldn't go around saying 'He shouldn't of been there' 'its all his fault'. I mean any person with common sense and a mind of their own would know it was his fault but the parents don't need to slapped round the face with it. I guess it helps people remember the good points of the lad instead of the upsetting brunt truth of why it happened.
