The Weighbridge in Alvechurch is just across the canal from the station. After a pint you can have a stroll up the canal to The Crown for another pint and a really good sandwich, then back to the Weighbridge for another pint and a proper dinner before heading home.

Two Cumbrian options which could work from where you are in the world, though note that neither have trains on a Sunday:

1. The Prince of Wales at Foxfield (pub is by the station). You could also or instead walk from Foxfield to Broughton-in-Furness, a village in the Lakes with three good pubs

2. For a long day out (probably best in the summer), the Boot Inn near Dalegarth or the Bower House Inn near Irton Bridge. Travel to Ravenglass, then use the 'Ratty' railway to get to the station of your choice. I can guarantee that this second one will offer you the prettiest walking option suggested!

Hathersage is a beautiful village with a couple of pubs. It's in the Peak District, like Edale. Indeed, it's a beautiful part of the world. I would imagine the other stations on the Manchester-Sheffield have a similar offering.

Castleton has some lovely ones - although they are a bit of a wander from the train.

Only about half a mile, and Castleton is a lovely Village/Town infact the majority on the Hope Valley line are really nice

Just to add my opinion! The pub at ribblehead station is very good as is edale, and there are some cracking pubs in castleton too. Cant really add any to that, but i also like the pubs in haworth on the kwvr. Fleece and old hall are very nice.

Was watching Michael Portillo at the Reedham swing bridge the other day and there was a pub in the background there – The Ship according to google maps.

Also The Lord Nelson and the Reedham Ferry Inn along the river bank.

Never been there myself though!

The Ferry Inn is a fair distance from the Ship and Lord Nelson. They're all about half a mile from the station, but in different directions. I think you can walk along the towpath, but it was shut when I was last there, so we had walk along the roads- virtually back to the station and out again
There was also a beer festival on in the village hall that day!
There used to be a pub by the station (The Railway?) but that shut a few years back.

All four have been in the Good Beer Guide at some point in the last ten years!



I was staying in the Prince of Wales in Foxfield in November. We got the train to Boot and walked back over Bootle Fell (via the Manor Arms in Broughton). Lovely walk- about 9-10 miles, I think.
Superb pub!

Another option is to use the Ratty Arms at Ravenglass (the up side station building) walk to Dalegarth (7 miles by rail, probably a little more by road/footppath), quaff a pint or two at the boot Arms, and catch La'al Ratty back to Ravenglass.

I do like to go to Greenfield station (last one on the GMPTE day tickets) and then have a walk over the hills to end in the Diggle Hotel for an evening meal and drinks before a relatively simple stretch along the canal for the Railway, the train to Stalybridge buffet, etc.

One time I have done the walk to Diggle, then over the top to Marsden before coming back to Diggle for a meal. The brewery tap in Marsden is definitely worth a visit for its' ale but never sampled the food there.

When I was living in Manchester I would have to say I felt spoiled for good country pubs in easy reach, the Hope Valley line offering another load as mentioned (Hathersage was our usual eating place on that route, but the "crawl" from Edale through Hope, Castleton and Bamford is not a bad idea for those who like good real ale.

Ultimately it is the GMPTE tickets that always take me back to the Greenfield options, that and the Railway in Greenfield and Stalybridge buffet serve as excellent waiting rooms.

Arnside on the Barrow line. Two great pubs in the village and a properly world class view over the bay from both of them. In an AONB with very scenic and non too arduous walks.

The Hazel Pear, Acton bridge. Plenty of trains to see from the pub garden, excellent food, also owls, pigs, goats and ducks in the pub nature reserve. Only downside is poor train service

I got off at Acton Bridge last year only to find the Hazel Pear closed down.

Well, if I may say, the daddy of them all - The Station Inn, Ribblehead. Went there with a mate recently, watched a bit of rugby on the telly then went for a walk to have a look at the viaduct only to see a kettle come steaming over the top !

If you were looking for something more energetic you could walk from Ribblehead into Dent Dale and have a pint at the Sportmans Inn at Cowgill before walking up the Coal Road to the station. Lots of railway interest on that walk but the climb up to the station is quite steep!
