Rail Accessible Country Pub

Afternoon,

I'm after a cheapish day out consisting of a train to somewhere (not fussy where) and a walk in somewhere pretty, preferably with a pub lunch en route.

My only example is Cuddington, Cheshire where The White Barn is right outside the station, then it's one stop back to Delamere for a walk in the forest.

Don't mind travelling further afield. All ideas welcome.

Edale is perfect for you, or the Golden Pheasant at Plumley (but that did seem to be shut the other night)

I think its called..The Railway (surprise Surprise) take a right going towards chester its about 50 metres up, it does have a good reputation (I pick up enough of their clientele lol)

Well, if I may say, the daddy of them all - The Station Inn, Ribblehead. Went there with a mate recently, watched a bit of rugby on the telly then went for a walk to have a look at the viaduct only to see a kettle come steaming over the top !

Goathland - Beck Hole then Grosmont is an easy walk down the incline.
Pub at Goathland, then Birch Hall Inn at Beck Hole and the Station at Grosmont.
All worth a visit.

That's a good one, certainly another reccommendation from me.

A walk along the canal between Slaithwaite and Marsden (or even from Huddersfield if you are feeling particularly fit) then a few pints and something to eat at the Riverhead Brewery Tap in Marsden is also a good one.

You lucky thing! I spent a whole afternoon looking out for passing locos at Ribblehead in freezing gale force winds, only to see the odd unit, then when I went for a pint a light Malcolm Rail loco went over the viaduct! Typical

Disembark at Dunblane, walk to the Sheriffuir Inn, walk to Bridge of Allan, return.

If it makes you feel any better, we were directly under it at the time so it wasn't much of an angle to view it from. Sound effects were good though

For those in Southland, the Tickled Trout near Wye is quite nice and has a pleasent beer garden with a view of the railway and the river.

I'll have to try that one as I've not been there before !

It's owned by the people that run Ossett Brewery (so thumbs up there). I made the mistake of going to Marsden and having Sunday lunch, couple of pints then going for a walk (not a good idea). Next time I'll do the walk first and then have something to eat.

Only slight problem is the fact it is one of the rail ale trail stops, so will be busy on weekends/BHs.

the Railway at Mobberley is one of my favorites. Unpretentious but comfy pub, with good ale and good pub grub and always a welcome. It's right by the station at Mobberley, though just out of sight of the line with trees blocking any chance of watching the trains as you enjoy the pleasant garden (but you can hear them, and the crossing klaxon!). Plenty of aeroplanes overhead, though; it is close to the end of the runways of Manchester Airport!

The Hazel Pear, Acton bridge. Plenty of trains to see from the pub garden, excellent food, also owls, pigs, goats and ducks in the pub nature reserve. Only downside is poor train service

Yeah that's the one. There's also a pub called The Railway right by Marsden station that featured in Last of The Summer Wine.

From Wrenbury station, turn left at the level crossing & walk about 2/3 of a mile down the lane to the Bhurtpore Inn. Excellent range of real ales, continental lagers & a cider list too.

Also does good home made food, including a range of home made curries.

Another good one the Manchester - Huddersfield line is the Roaches Lock, next to the canal in Mossley. You can either take a 15 minute walk down Manchester Road from Mossley station or if you fancy a bit more exercise and scenery follow the canal from Greenfield. The food is excellent and they always have a choice of a few cask ales.

A recent visitor didnt exactly rave about the pub ambience or service - and once there , you are very much committed. Plenty of other choices.

when I lived in Darlo in the 80s, I always liked to visit Locomotion #1 at Heighington station. Unfortunately the train service has deteriorated somewhat since then and I haven't been back since 1987

Check your dates carefully, however, as engineering works mean the usual SVR winter weekend service is not running this year until February half term week.

Nice real ale pub opposite Greenfield station as well, called not surprisingly The Railway.

Still going strong the last time I passed but haven't actually been in. WIll have to change that the next time I'm in the area.
