Today me and my younger brother travelled from Kilburn High Road to Oval Station. We were initially going to East Dulwich meaning we went from Kilburn to Willesden Junction then down to Clapham Junction but then we went to Balham to get the Northern Line train up to Oval instead.

Basically my brother possesses a 16+ oyster card but for the journey he was charged £4.10? Something which I didn't get as one cash fare journey is £4 if I'm correct? So at Oval we asked the assistant and he wasn't sure why he was charged so much as the start and end destination was in Zone 2 and not once did we venture into zone 1.

My only idea is that we travelled at peak time, but even then is it that much?
Sorry if I'm being stupid and the answer is really obvious....

Thanks

The Oyster fare from Kilburn High Road to Oval is the Zone 1&2 single which with 16+ is 95p off peak and £1.25 peak. There is no benefit to avoiding Zone 1 as you will be charged the 1&2 fare anyway.

Not sure about £4.10, but £4.30 is the Off-peak entry/exit charge for 16+. Are you sure that you touched in and out correctly? You only need to touch in at Kilburn High Road and out at Oval. The maximum journey time for Zone 1&2 is 100 Min and for one Zone is 70 Min. Did you exceed this?

We definitely touched in and out correctly. As far as I'm aware I'm 80% sure it wasn't 100 minutes. The guy at Oval told me to phone the number on my oyster card but I reckon they won't help. I'll try later though.

We also touched out and in at Balham because you have to, to get between the overground and underground section.

What time did he touch in and out at?

Not specifically sure but it was definitely peak time each time.

Unless you went over a time limit and got charged a maximum fare twice I can't see how this can have happened

The peak fare for zones 2-3 is 70p

I think you exceeded the maximum journey time if you went via Balham. Can you remember roughly how long the journey took? Also, Balham is in zone 3 and you would have needed to touch out and in again while changing from NR to LU. If you have access to journey history tomorrow and can copy the entries I might be able to see better how it was calculated.

I'll try and find out tomorrow the breakdown of the journey. As I said I don't think it was 100 minutes but my sense of time is poor though :D

Thanks anyway :)
