Lucky for her the Great Northern train crew were actually available. Couldn't imagine someone having to tell her Maj that her train is cancelled because they have no drivers available.

There's probably more chance of HM travelling on a Pacer than her eldest son doing so ....

Not the first time the Queen has travelled by train to Kings Lynn she has done this regularily over the years and there is no great fuss made when it happens .Local people in that area are well used to seeing the royals driving around etc.

I am guessing in a situation like this it would be announced to the TOC / NR etc. that she would be on this service (If for no other reason than the large security presence required.) Would a special head code be used? Would the Bobbies use the code 4-4-4 when talking to the next box?

The Royal Train headcode is 1X01 -RTT reports the standard useage of 1T16

Reuters reporting that the Queen commented "buggered if one is doing this on those awful, narrow class 700 seats - not even a table for one's crown!"
That does raise a point actually. How will the Queen's guard secure her majesty on a class 700?

the 700s will not be used on the Kings Lynne services
the management contact had class 377 on those services
But the plan may have changed

IIRC from a previous discussion, the driver usually isn't aware of it until they have a manager jump in their cab?

I had Prince William on one of my trains a few months ago, was just told was a public dignatary getting on in 1st and to reserve 4 seats. No managers, no parts of the train locked out and no special headcode etc. The driver didn't even know until I told him. We just had a few more security and BTP in black suits than normal!

When I was in the Civil Service. A senior manger returned from official travel to return part of his expenses as he had been downgraded from 1st class. The reason was the Home Secretary, Leon Brittain and his entourage had taken over 1st class. He told the Inspector giving him the refund not to apologise as he had no desire to sit anywhere near the Home Secretary as his appearance disgusted him.

"I say Philip, close those windows they're creating an awful racket"

"But I'm hot, why doesn't this train have bloody air conditioning"

And he was racist. Called me a German.

Why would that be racist in this case? Now if he'd called Phil a German....one the otherhand Angela Merkel might sort that one out :)

Now excuse me while I'm taken to some tower in London for the rest of my life :)

The Royal Train hasn't run as 1X01 for years now. 25 to 30 years ago it used a specific set of 1Zxx headcodes but doesn't even do that now.

What does it use then when it is running all big and proper?

I travelled on the same 10:44 train as her 2 years ago. The 10:44 is an 8 car with it splitting at Cambridge. Back then, the Royal party had the entire leading First Class compartment to themselves behind the driver. All other First pax including myself were instructed to sit in the rear First compartment, with some clearly not happy about it unaware of the VIPs!
