Quail maps

Hi does anyone know where you can buy quail maps from apart from online.....im after a shop or premises I can go into, if anyone knows of a chain of stores or even a premises where they sell them in the uk...

The Ian Allan bookstore on Manchester Piccadilly station approach has them, so I might assume the Birmingham, London and Cardiff ones do!

Actually the only caveat to that is that they might not have a full set, the earlier ones like Eastern (2006) and Scotland/Isle of Man (2007) are quite old now so may be harder to find.

The Ian Allan shops (see here) are probably your best bet. They are also stocked by a few WH Smith outlets in particularly "spotter-ish" stations - definitely Crewe and York, for example, and possibly New Street - but most WH Smiths won't stock them.

FYI both Scottish and Eastern Quails were in stock in WH Smith in York on Saturday, I think the only one I didn't see was the Southern book. Perhaps they reprinted them.

I wondered that too about the older Maps - the ones I have from when I bought them 5-6 years ago are standard paper covers, the ones about these days are glossy and more solid.

I also wonder when the next update will be - they've been silent since the new Midland one over a year ago.

You can order them at any decent bookshop if you know the ISBN number and publisher.

I bought my set of Quail trackmaps at Ian Allan behind Waterloo Station. It's a compulsory stop for me when in London. They have a good selection of Rail Maps and Atlases.

Bear in mind in the Eastern book, Colchester / Clacton and now Ipswich will be wrong, due to remodelling and resignalling in 2009/11 and 2014, with further changes in the Colchester area in2015

The Sectional Appendix is now available on the NR website, albeit only as one rather huge file per Route unless you register (which I think is only possible for people with an email address at a company active in the rail industry). This provides more up-to-date track layouts as well as extra information such as permitted speeds and operating instructions for specific locations. The Quail is useful as orientation and for quick checks but for any critical work it's a good idea to download the relevant SA.

The ones you can download if you register are generally up to date. I think this is where the TOCs are now encouraged to get theirs from.

Yes but they are only available to people in the industry. Anyone without that facility get the out of date ones. Some quails are more up to date

That was the case until a couple of years ago, when they seemed to be a 2009 snapshot but the current public versions, (from the links on the RH side of the NR page), do include more regular page by page updates.
Taking the current Kent/Sussex/Wesex as an example, although it is currently showing as the Dec 2009 version, it includes 06 September 2014 amendments. The vast majority of pages are either 2013 or 2014 issues, there's only a handful dating from the original date.

The SA isnt that accurate anyway hence some TOCs doing their own route maps which are accurate*.


* except for the deliberate (small) errors in them which are there to check if the trainees are going out and about or just copying somebody elses map!

There's always the monthly update in Modern Railways. Never seen the point myself but I'm sure there are some completists who annotate their Quails religiously.

Aye, there's a colour Southern Quail that was released back in 2008 (I think). The next one due I think would be Eastern (last updated 2006), however I have no idea when that would be.

Even for those of us who don't annotate Quails, those pages are an interesting read. You never realise how much actually changes unannounced until you've read it.
