Purchase Rovers on a Train

Too late now but you would be required to buy a CDS to your first destination from the vending machine at WRX and then part-exchange it on-train, otherwise the guard would be within his rights to refuse to sell you the rover and require you to buy an anytime ticket.

Though presumably, having bought the anytime, you could then part-exchange that anytime for a rover since you still couldn't have bought the rover off the train?

That's reasonable. I understand the part-exchange process is a bit of a drag so guards may prefer to just issue the ticket anew.

And in some circumstances the rule that you must buy a ticket for at least part of the journey could see you paying more than necessary. GroupSave being the prime example. To comply strictly with NRcoC, everyone must hold a valid ticket.

So, say 4 adults want to travel from a station with only a TVM, the fare to their destination is £5 CDR. GroupSave means they should pay £10 in total. What if the cheapest CDR that entitles them to make part of the journey is £4? They'd have to pay £16 to comply with NRCoC and how then does the guard on board excess you to the GroupSave product. He certainly won't be refunding the £6 overspend. No, you'll have to expend time and effort chasing up a refund from the TOC - all because of their inadequacies when it comes to TVMs.

He was finding mugs who would sell it to him, letting the lure of commission in nearly £1K override their common sense.

The same gent has been done in the past for card fraud, and although he sometimes offers his card, as soon as you say "No, I can't swipe it, I have to chip and pin it", he grabs it back and decides he doesn't need whatever ticket he was buying after all.

Something like that went on up here involving 1st class rovers and the card was iffy. Before we had chip and pin so it was just a swipe. A few Guards fell victim to it.

I have since found out from EMT's Penalty Fare Leaflet that if the ticket you want isn't available from a TVM that you are permitted to buy on board and don't have to do any of this buy a Single to Anywhere nonsense.
