Purchase Rovers on a Train

I will be traveling on a heart of England 3 in 7 tomorrow. As Wrexham General booking office will not be open at 06:40 in the morning which is when I want to travel can I purchase this ticket on the train?

If not then do I have to purchase it at Birmingham New Street which is the first change on my journey.

The Avantix Mobile machine used by the Guard will quite happily sell the ticket. Whether the Guard knows how to do it is a different matter.

Don't you know how to access the rover menu on the Avantix?

Go to "Secondary" or "Tertiary" on the home screen (I forget which), then select "Rovers" then just type the name of the rover into the relevant box. Note that lots of Rovers are abbrieveated, so "Freedom of the North West 4 in 8" is under "FONW 4 in 8", so if unsure just type in the first letter and do a search.

you need to ask the guard to go into secondary, rover enquiry and ask him to put the code H37 in, or type in heart and it should come up.

This sounds like a good plan. Thanks to everyone for the advice.

I only asked as last time this happened albeit from Wrexham Central (Unstaffed) the guard on the train refused to sell me a North Wales Day Ranger as he said it didn't exist. :roll:

It must be pretty rare to issue rovers on trains. In an area I know where rovers are commonly issued on trains, all the guards know how to issue them.

Working in London, I've never been asked for a rover at all - really wanted to sell one though!

I Have issued lots of rovers and ranger tickets on the train and know well how to enter them.....and I could even issue a PRIV one!

I have issued Ride Cornwall, Devon Ranger and Devon Evening Ranger, FODC, FOSS, FOSW

I even recommend these tickets as they are cheaper than normal tickets. The Devon Evening Ranger is especially good value

We were probably told many years ago when doing Avantex training. However, if nobody asks for one for over four years, then one is inclined to be a bit rusty.

For example, if I was to ask a Guard from Northern to sell me a zone 1-2 travelcard, I might expect them to struggle as well, despite it being in the system.

You would think Guards would make it their business with the knowledge of how to dispense one of these rovers and the more expensive ticket types. It's a nice bit of commission with the price of most of them

I wasn't having a go at you! A lot of guards don't know how to dispense lesser ticket types like the 4 in 8 rovers etc and so they could be missing out on a bit of money here

One gent I know of travels on First Class all-line rovers. He buys them on-train, and tells the train-crew how to sell them. The cheque used to pay for them invariably bounces. We have been instructed not to sell that ticket on-train for that reason

Ticket is available on the train if shut. Guard should look under:
Main Screen
Select
Rovers & Rangers
Type in
HE3
Ad/Child ... price will come up.

Also if boarding at Wrexham, please do not board with your horse.

Presumably that can't happen now anyway because cheques are no longer accepted on trains.

But the cheque would have been above the guarantee limit so couldn't be guaranteed and therefore not accepted.

If this was SWT then that would definetly be the case, but ATW tend to be a bit more lenient and would probably show discretion!

Working in London, I've never been asked for a rover at all - really wanted to sell one though!

I am sure it happens very reguarly in certain areas. My local TOC, Northern, must issue loads (I have bought quite a few) due the severe lack of ticket purchasing facilities across the network. They were only local day rovers, taking a little longer than a normal ticket, but there were no issues.

NRCOC Section A part 3 says

"3. Where the full range of tickets is not available
If you cannot buy an appropriate ticket for the journey you want to make because the
range of tickets that is available at the station from which you intend to start your journey
is restricted, you must buy a ticket or Permit to Travel before you travel that entitles you to
make at least part of the journey. Then you must, as soon as is reasonably practicable, buy
an appropriate ticket to complete your journey. In these circumstances, you only need to pay
the fare that you would have paid if you had bought a ticket immediately before your journey.
The price you will have to pay will be reduced by the amount paid for the ticket or Permit to
Travel."

As the ticket machine at Wrexham can't issue me a Permit to Travel, and the full range of tickets is not available. Why do I need to buy a single? Ahh I've re-read that so it says I need a single ticket. Hmmmm why can't the machines just issue the rovers in the first place.

However the guard issued me with the ticket on the train with no fuss at all.

The answer either involves ATW not wanting to pay to have it programmed in or being worried that passengers will buy it when it's not appropriate for their journey.

That's reasonable. I understand the part-exchange process is a bit of a drag so guards may prefer to just issue the ticket anew.

I tried that once and was told Avantix couldn't do part exchange for a Cheshire Day Ranger by a Crewe -Derby EMT guard and was advised by Crewe booking office to just board the train in future without a ticket as it wasn't my fault the full range of tickets wasn't available.

I'd take a bet that they can do it. But either the company has locked the feature out, or it's so rare for an ATW guard to need to do it they aren't sure how too.

Avantix should be able to do it as it does it for when people present a permit to travel so i see no reason why they cant do a part exchange also.

I would try it out when i get to work but my ability with Avantix is not that good with rather complex things - and im not sure i would want to learn it either

I'd hazard a guess that it could involve overriding the fare, though doing that isn't welcomed by ATOC apparently, nor your boss for that matter.

He was finding mugs who would sell it to him, letting the lure of commission in nearly £1K override their common sense.

The same gent has been done in the past for card fraud, and although he sometimes offers his card, as soon as you say "No, I can't swipe it, I have to chip and pin it", he grabs it back and decides he doesn't need whatever ticket he was buying after all.
