Just check the FCC site.

FCC said:
Buses replace trains between Ely and Downham Market until further notice.

Emergency services are dealing with an incident between Littleport and Downham Market.

Because of this, buses are replacing trains between Ely and Downham Market. Journey times may be extended by up to 30 minutes. There is no estimate for when trains will be able to resume.

In short, 2H94 (16:15 FCC Cambridge to Downham Market) was involved in the accident with a camper van at Littleport Bypass Crossing and has been declared a failure.

No injuries reported, all passengers detrained and fitters on way.

This looks to last until mid day tomorrow with buses running between Ely and Downham Market in both directions, XC is also accepting FCC tickets between Cambridge and Ely.

Very fortunate it didn't turn out worse as the last bogie on the train derailed for 100yds before rerailing itself.

There's some more details here. Seems the driver passed vehicles waiting at the barrier.

Thankfully this looks like a trivial accident in terms of damage and injuries - if it was road vehicle on road vehicle it would be all done and dusted within an hour - but as it involves a train the line is shut for half a day - why - the rail sector is bogged down in bureaucracy for seemingly little reason which all adds to cost of running the network to no benefit to its users.

This is not quite true is it.. Been stuck in Jams where the roads have been shut for well over 3 hours just to clean it all up again.

Remember too that train stopping distances can be a little bit longer then a car - thus can be a bit more difficult to then get to the stricken train too.

Also i cant see barriers on that pic on the news report..

If the last bogie derailed and then re-railed itself, there's a very good chance of the train being somewhat damaged- certainly damaged enough to make recovery more difficult- and the line is single track (mainly) with passing loops at stations.

How do you drive into the side of a train? The driver should be jailed for being a complete idiot and potentially harming people on the train.

Does make you wonder how some people are ever allowed on the roads!

In the article linked above there is an interesting comment posted

I don't think the normal level crossing warning lights there are working properly.

Seems an odd thing to post when there is already a queue of traffic stopped for the crossing which would suggest to me that they do work!

Looks like another "rail accident" despite the train being seemingly the secondary factor of the accident. I guess to an extent they were lucky that they drove into the side of the train rather than in front and being hit by it

TRIVIAL - please engage brain before you type, firstly people were trapped in the road vehicle, would you suggest it was just pushed out of the way to reopen the road

Secondly the train needs to be thoroughly inspected and made safe before it can move- I know let's just move the damm thing to clear the line and to hell with safety

Thirdly - the train derailed before righting itself but not before the track was damaged, oh did let's just get the next half dozen trains across as quick as possible and keep our fingers crossed theirs no disaster

Fourth - don't even bother checking to see if the crossing is working safely, let's just reopen the damm thing and if it happens again then at least we will know it's the crossing to blame

Now I know the railway is shrouded in rules and more rules but please don't make stupid comments about it needing to be reopened immediately, in this case it was extremely lucky that no one died, without it being investigated thoroughly who knows next time

Yesterday's incident is still causing a few issues on the line this morning.

First Capital Connect said:
06:47 Ely to London Kings Cross due 08:06

More info
Will be formed of 4 coaches instead of 8 from Ely.
Additional Facilities Information:
Will be formed of 8 coaches instead of 12 from Cambridge..
This is due to an earlier problem at a level crossing.

Some trains are also delayed due to lack of train crew members, but I don't think that's related.

The crossing is fitted with CCTV and lets just say it raises a few eyebrows and with the level of damage done to the camper they were very very lucky.

The crossing was working correctly but then got damaged after the impact. So its either a case of human error (intentional or not) or some kind of mechanical failure on the camper van.

These are the drivers that usually get by without having accidents themselves, but leave a trail of carnage behind them.

I hope this person gives up his license and doesn't get any sympathy on account of his age. If it's true the back of the train partially derailed, there was a really high chance that it could have been far worse - with fatalities on the train caused by someone who was obviously unfit to drive.

Very true. Obviously it's important though to ensure that there was no other factor involved, such as a problem with the camper van or the driver being taken ill at just the wrong moment. Both seem unlikely from the reports, but of course it's always essential to know these things before passing judgement. But it does sound like just an astonishingly incompetent bit of driving
