As a current RPI I can tell you that they WILL do all three. City of London magistrates for example are well known for being very tough indeed and fines upward of £500 are common PLUS you will still have to pay the fare you avoided in the first place.

That's more than fair. If people who are supposed pay full fare are punished for fare dodging, people who abuse their free passes should get it 10 times worse! Especially when they do sod all for the railway.

I am aware that they can strike off a box and date another, (as I've had it done to me :roll but I've been told by a TPE guard that RPIs can take my priv away from me and charge me for a ticket.

I'm actually now very scared of guards and RPIs!

Yes VXCFan, priv holders are asked not to take any complimentary items from first class.

Why? Scared of paying money? If you don't fill in a box then you should be forced to fill it in or get it taken away from you. Even for free travel why do you feel the need to cheat the priv?

I'm currently 15, but turning 16 in April, and he wouldn't get the job until at least January.

And also, my grandparents have priv, is there anyway I can travel with them on theirs?

Well yes, I admittedly forgot about that. You won't be able to get free travel on all trains though.

To answer your question yes you will be entitled to PRIV however its slightly different to what was issued to BR staff.

Basically the minimum that you get these days is a TOC travel pass and a TOCNE PRIV pass which entitles you to 75% off SDS/SDR. National Express and First also issue a box card which allows you free travel on other NEX TOC's for 30 days (15 boxes, two days per box), Go-Ahead give you completely free travel on all its TOC's (at least it did with Thameslink and Southern and now South Eastern and Southern).

Your stepdad will need a passport photo. The travel pass is usually issued instantly and the PRIV after 1 month, FIP is issued after 12 months service and gives you Eurostar and European discounts including coupon books which allow you totally free travel within a certain country excluding reservations on the High Speed services. Eurostar 1st class return was £50 last time I used it but remember that the quota is very small and you should book WELL in advance.

I'm going to Ash Vale on Thursday, then travelling on Saturday, again on Sunday and again on either Monday or Tuesday.

Or just don't plan so many journies and don't expect so much? If you want to go on so many trips, pay for it. If you cant pay for it, don't go. Simple.

I'm getting there. Just doing odd jobs for people and stuff like that.
I've made £100 in about 12 weeks So I've got £207 in the bank right now and I need £738.99. I'll get there eventually.

Anyway, yes, I don't want a job yet. I get free travel. I take it for granted because I've always had it. I couldn't imagine not having it. Paying for rail travel seems weird to me. Think of me what you will, but can we stop going on about it now? Cheers.

I assume you mean Gatwick Express? If so then yes.

You can buy PRIV tickets for the Heathrow Express, as far as I know they don't allow boxes on the HEX.

Rail Europe used to be British Rail international, now owned by SNCF. Any employee who works for Rail Europe (Even new starters) get 8 boxes a year + 75% discount, plus the added benefit of 2 free european journeys a year once probation has been passed. How can this be i hear you ask? Well its because as Rail Europe was previously BR international and we did not get allocated to a TOC we were given rights to continue using the existing Priv scheme by ATOC. So if you want a job working for Rail Europe they have positions available in their call centre (where you would get trained by me) and you get a box pass and many other benefits. Great Central Railway employees (not volunteers before you all rush to join up) get priv - as a result all mainline rail employees get either discounted or free travel (I can't recall which).

Seriously, privs for safeguarded staff will remain the same as they always have - they're protected by law. Privs for new entrants (since 1996) will depend on the new company but I suspect that the arrangements will be similar to those operating on South West Trains. In other words EMT staff will get free travel on EMT services and 75% discount on other TOCs. Other TOCs' new entrants will get 75% discount on EMT.

There's a full list here. Although it says this document is for safeguarded staff, the heritage railway details also apply to non-safeguarded and retired staff.

Notes that the discounts granted do tend to vary a lot, mostly between about 10% and 50%.

I see that Go-Ahead gives its staff free travel on all three of its TOCs - Southern, Southeastern, and London Midland. So an employee of one of those TOCs can travel (with a bit of convoluted changing) all the way from Dover to Shrewsbury free of charge.
