Random!
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---

The facts say that random stop and searches under the terrorism act have a 0% success rate, you can understand our surprise at anyone still thinking this is a good way of preventing terrorism.
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---

That's what an argument is like... Yorkie and I are more than willing to listen to factual arguments and if we have got it wrong, prove us wrong and we'll admit to our mistakes (Not directed straight at you Nathan).

how was it random?

Well I'm with the people that say the terrorists have won. They did. The chances of being killed by a terrorist is so remote, it's hardly worth worrying about. You have many times more chance of being killed by a member of your own family. That's a fact.

I'd be more in favour of curtailing the freedoms of the press and stop giving them the oxygen of publicity.

*Yawns*

Sorry, but I've missed the last 9 pages. What are we talking about now...? Still debating "stop and search" methodology or are we now navel-gazing in an attempt to justify why we're still banging on about all this?

Quite honestly, wearing the opposition down to the point where they've given up does not necessarily mean you've won the argument. Nor does demanding that they produce hard facts to disprove what you say mean that you are correct. There will always be at least two sides to every discussion, and most often one side will fail to convince the other.

As for the topic at hand, there will be some people who don't mind the Police going about their legal and legitimate business and some who see it as an imposition on their human rights. I have absolutely no interest in entering this particular debate so I don't want folk barracking me, but I would identify with the former group more than the latter. I have nothing to hide or fear from the Police, and if taking the time to satisfy them that I am going about my business in a law-abiding manner then I am happy to do so. I'm savvy enough to understand that full cooperation will see me out and back on my way more quickly than arguing the toss at every turn. In addition, I am not so dumb as to fail to notice that a lot of what the Police do is an exercise in public reassurance that yields little in the way of actual arrests and prosecutions.

But one thing I'm dying to know. Where did all these criminologists suddenly spring from...?

Police on station platforms, even if they don't make any arrests, are a visual deterrent if nothing else to would-be terrorists. I doubt it makes much difference, but you never know.

At the end of the day, if the police stop one million people and make one arrest, and stop one bomb going off, and save possibly hundreds of lives, then it is a job well done if you ask me.

Hail All! <D
To be perfectly frank, I'm more saddened and bothered with the way that society - As a whole - Has gone downhill over the past 750 years.<(
Let me clarify my point thus...
  • 500 years ago: Ye'd spill someone's pint, tempers would get heated, Swords would be drawn, and the matter would be resolved via a duel to first Blood. <D
  • 100 years ago: Ye'd spill someone's pint, tempers would get heated, hands would get formed into fists, and an enjoyable 40-man pagga would ensue. 8)
  • 50 years ago: Ye'd spill someone's pint, tempers would get heated, but they'd cool down again after ye'd offer to buy them another one. :?
  • Present day: You spill someone's pint, and he becomes understandably bothered...But being a "modern man" and a pacifist, he decides to draw you into a six-hour long discussion about how ye made an error in your physical actions, and how ye could avoid making that same error in the future. At this point, ye wish ye'd simply mumbled something under your breath in Welsh and jammed a fiver into his shirt pocket, walking away before such a boring out-of-hours "meeting" could ever have happened in the first place.
  • The Future: "Have you ever suffered a spilled pint that was not your fault? Call us now on 0800-MY-BEER...You could be entitled to no win, no fee compensation!":roll:<(
We've filled up our society with so much unnecessary s***e and red tape, that efficiency and common sense - Especially where the Government is concerned - Simply doesn't exist anymore!:cry::mad:

To prevent this turning into a huge rant about how crap modern society is when compared to the society in Norway around 850CE, I'll just cut to the quick and say that there is only one way to deal with those verified as being terrorists:
Find 'em, torture 'em, extract as much information about other terrorist cells out of them as possible using the most horrific and Gory methods available, then pike 'em on a spear and put 'em on public display in Parlament Square or some other suitable place of condemnation to tell these extremist ba****ds that we mean business! <(
Farewell... <D

Did you actually read the article Beaker linked to?
Did you actually read my comments on it?

Obviously not!

No I'm sorry Yorkie but you have got to stop telling people what they have and haven't done. You're not there with him so how would you know if he has read it or not? Or are you just dictating to him?

*sigh* this is getting silly - can't you think of anything better to say? that quote is old now and since then he has said the same thing to me and I don't see you moaning at that. It's not "dictating" as I am not demaning that he does something; I have observed that he has not done something (past tense), you can't dictate in the past, you're just saying any old gibberish as you've run out of sensible things to say.

If you read what I said after my observation I gave reasons for it. If you want to delve into this further it is going to be tedious but you are welcome to PM me and disagree with my reasons if you wish, I just ask that you do so in a constructive manner and refer to the original posts.

By the way, I am not "dictating" to you if I say you've obviously not been to the moon. I don't have to be with you to determine that.

Equally if I say "what happened to the XC HST today?" you could legitimately observe that would indicate I had not read HSTgen; you don't have to be with me to conclude that and you would not be dictating to me. Think about it.

I think Loader is entitled to his opinion, however flawed or unflawed it may be (in your opinion...)

You're right this is getting silly and I believe you have argued about this as much as you can argue about it. But you think arguing so much that the opposition gets tired and cannot be bothered to take it much further (which is what I believe...).

You like arguing with police? What's wrong with you? If you're arguing for the sake of being obnoxious, you do realise it's 100% up to them who wins?

Yeeee, one of the admins - *meld* or something, said summat about like. This could go on for ages, and it's gone far from the original topic, and is just a bicker between two people.

Something like that

Its not 100% up to them at all who wins. They have to abide by the law just the same as us, and cannot bend it to suit their needs. They can only arrest you/reprimand you if you have done something wrong. Arguing with them over whether its illegal to take photos of a train on the other hand, is not illegal and can be rather humorous while they try and find an excuse. 8)

I'm sure if you were being particularly obstreperous they could arrest you for something like breach of the peace. Or detain you for 9 hours on some trumped-up terrorism charge...

Yes it is up to them. You will come to realise that they don't need a genuine reason to search you, they will make up some bullsh*t and do it anyway. And even if you utter a word in protest they can arrest you. Sometimes it's better to keep your head down and treat the situation with a laconic attitude. If you believe otherwise then you must either live in a parallel universe or suffer from woeful ignorance.

I don't know what Rozzers you've been involved with, but they cant do that at all. If they did, you can report them and then they will get the b*llucking! This is not Nazi Germany or indeed Stalins Russia, and the coppers don't act quite like what you seem to think they do.

RJ is just talking from a personal experience I guess which he now then see's it as it is like that all the time.

There was a story posted earlier, a small number of the police do take exception and will take action. In the end it will probably work out in your favour, but you've got the hassle of being arrested and detained to contend with for a few hours first.

On the other hand, there are a few Police who will change the rules if you are alright. I got stopped once (not searched) and it turned out the Officer was wrong. He was supposed to fill out a form and give a copy to me but we both agreed that it was a waste of both of our time and just left it at that.
