The connection has already been lifted, the branch line is now physically isolated.

Is it? From what I saw there on Wednesday, it's still possible for a train from Smethwick to terminate in platform 1 (or at least the track exists for that; not sure about pointwork and signalling).

Yes It was still there on thursday. I'll double check on monday though as I pass through there everyday!

I say lifted, essentially their locked out of use points and signalling wise with a manual lever pull required near the junction box. A driver wishing to leave the branch would have to dismout go over to the signal box and pull the lever then return to the vehicle, cant be done remotley.

Hardly impossible though.

Wouldn't lifting the connection make it a nightmare to take the PPM to some sort of heavy servicing depot or whatever?

They have their own shed where all the work that is needed is done. I suppose if they ever needed to be taken to another location for some reason they would just put on the back of a lorry and drive it there by road.

Ive had a brain wave - it is still there and will always be, the units traverse the link track when they are being swapped over. They just don't go past a certain point that is marked - before the main line begins.

Yeah - at least one set of points has to remain for the swapover. There is a sign along that bit of track that says that it is the shunt limit point for the Class 139
