HST powercars still give out the wrong type of ETH for conventional carriages. The carriages would have to be converted to the HST type, which could be quite costly.
During the 1990s the sleepers were hauled by pairs of Class 37 locos, hence no ETH
The ETH was supplied using one of three specially converted NXX generator vans
Equally, some charter rakes now use such a generator van or coach
The same principle could be applied when using two HST Power Cars

As for the Class 57 reliability this becomes more obvious when there are small number of locos and especially when there is no alternative, compare to when there were large numbers of Class 47 locos in the 1990s, many were strategic reserves
For the sleepers there would usually be one alternative loco within 100 miles
Equally, it is not just the Class 57 that suffers this, but also now the Class 90

The real question to ask is, are the FGW 57s really as unreliable as people make out to be? It isn't really that often that they do sit down and considering the mileage that they can cover in a week surely they've got to be given some credit.

Oh and never believe what a driver tells you.

from what i have read elsewhere... the FGW class 57/6s are not that unreliable...
its just that when one fails.. or is taken out of service for repairs... a big deal is made of it.

personally i think the problem is too small a fleet... and not enough daily use...

If you increase the fleet size, you would then decrease the amount of running they do. Currently only 3 locos a day are required, but even two locos isn't a problem, an 08 is just used for the shunt from Old Oak-Paddington.

AIUI the class 08 is only being used because with one of the class 57s at loughbourgh there is a shortage of class 57s to cover the daily workings, and still allow one to be on exam

It's been used quite a lot in the last year or so. If they are short of a locomotive it can be used for the shunt. Before 57603 was sent for a repaint, 57605 was stopped for a long time for bogie work.

I don't fall for anything

Dont know what the status on Freightmaster means, but it seems as though youve either misunderstood something, or have fallen for something here. Dont worry about it though. Seems quite an easy mistake to make.
A few people on here have forgotten the nice way of correcting you.

not to be too nasty about this...
you have read something on a forum, treated it as "matter of fact"... reposted the information without making note of where you read it (or where you think you read it if you cant remember) on this and possibly other forums....

its like your posting a list of the "headlines" from the Railways Illustrated rumour section as factual, set in stone information...

now fair enough i may have been similar in my youth... but you have to learn quickly... if you don't already know.... that a lot of stuff posted on forums are personal opinions, hopes or misinterpretation of factual information...

... anyway... remember that the class 57/3 (and a lot of the 57/0s and all the 57602-57605 batch) are OWNED by Porterbrook who lease the 57/3s to Virgin .. and AFAIK they are on lease until the end of the ICWC franchise... for one of them to be scrapped there would have to be a shortage of parts for the GM engines or due to a (touch hairy wood) smash that damaged a loco beyond economic repair.
however there has been talk both rumours and factual regarding Virgin returning some of the class 57/3s off lease early... however that has not happened, and may not happen... likewise there has been talk about Virgin keeping them on lease, but putting certain members of the class into warm store, or swapping the locos in and out of store to keep engine hours level, and keep them all operational... but as yet that hasnt happened, and again, may not happen... it depends on decisions by virgin (and DfT), and/or porterbrook being made behind closed doors

yes but i thought it was a full internal refit?

But thats pretty much where it ends - Its still pretty much a 47 With new internal guts in...The bodyshells still a 47, The underframe equipments still a 47, and well - the bogies are still that of a 47...So whilst the power units newer, time still takes its toll on things line the bodies and bogies, which are of course from the 1960s...

As for 57302...Highly doubt it considering that A, its still in use, and B Its on lease is still fairly new from BRUSH - So just as others have said, Youve pretty much been had there! - junglejames, Im with you on that one!
