During the 1990s the sleepers were hauled by pairs of Class 37 locos, hence no ETHHST powercars still give out the wrong type of ETH for conventional carriages. The carriages would have to be converted to the HST type, which could be quite costly.
The ETH was supplied using one of three specially converted NXX generator vans
Equally, some charter rakes now use such a generator van or coach
The same principle could be applied when using two HST Power Cars
As for the Class 57 reliability this becomes more obvious when there are small number of locos and especially when there is no alternative, compare to when there were large numbers of Class 47 locos in the 1990s, many were strategic reserves
For the sleepers there would usually be one alternative loco within 100 miles
Equally, it is not just the Class 57 that suffers this, but also now the Class 90
