I understand the DC power bus thing "43096" but I understand Wabtec have had to install the other power bus anyway, so presumably it would be possible even though obviously necessary, to fit the power bus(es) to a 321.
AFAIK, the 769s haven't had 'the other power bus' installed (whatever that is). What was required was a negative return cable running the length of the train. When running on 3rd rail or OLE, the return for the DC or ac load is via that track. When running in DE mode, the generator negative side isisolated, so a gauranteed treturn path has been installed. As far as 321s go, their traction control is not on a DC bus, so it would be unsuitable for taking power from a 3 phase source.
Pains to me to say it but Northern and TfW should have bought a few extra CAF 19x and Porterbrook's flex project should have, and should still be dragged off to Simms at Newport. ...
You are of course assumimng that:
a) there is a budget for even more new trains
b) that more pure diesel units would be acceptable in the light of climate change policies
c) that CAF is in a position to supply extra trains in a time short enough to prevent the need for 769s to fill the gap.
