Yesterday morning I got 1V04 0704 Nottingham - Cardiff from Willington which left Nottingham on time and ran into Derby 3 mins late at 0737 with a scheduled departure of 0738. While watching the train on Open Train Times map not long after the arrival the incoming Matlock service 2A15 got the route set into the same platform even though it was still in the Duffield area. This lead to the Cardiff service leaving Derby almost 10 mins late as it had to wait for the Matlock to arrive before being able to set the route out.
Was there something else at play or just poor regulation? To me it seems poor to have the route set for the Matlock service for a good 5 mins as the Cardiff service could be long gone by the time it arrives and out the way of the Crewe service which was also delayed allowing Matlock service could arrive on a main aspect rather than call on as well.
