LM Ticket Acceptance from Twitter:

LM tickets accepted: @FirstCC & @EMTrains to/from London St.Pancras and @chilternrailway to/from London Marylebone.

If Virgin have ticket acceptance best thing I can suggest is :

Chiltern London Marylebone - Birmingham Moor Street

ATW Birmingham New Street - Chester

The slow lines have now re-opened.

#MiltonKeynes - The slow line has now re-opened and services will begin calling at Milton Keynes Central.

Supposedly, the incident occurred just to the North of the station, and therefore the station itself could be reopened reasonably quickly - as has apparently just happened.

I'm stuck at Bletchley, trying to get back to Birmingham. Seen a few VT services heading north, but no LMs. I have a Great Escape ticket, wonder if Virgin will take it between Milton Keynes Central and the West Midlands?

Doesn't seem to be any ticket acceptance between LM & Virgin.

Virgin have just replied to my tweet. Ticket acceptance with great escape on VT.

Cheers! ;) However the 19.26 off Bletchley has powered through, bound (hopefully) for New Street!

Thanks for all the advice. Daughter managed to get on 18:43 Virgin service to Crewe which wasn’t ideal (she was standing to Milton Keynes then a seat became available). Of course it was a much longer journey than was originally planned as this train went via Birmingham New Street etc. Plus the delay meant it arrived at 21:43 not 21:16.

I believe the trains started departing from Euston a little later and if she’d waited she would have actually got back to Chester on a later train before the one she was on. But that’s hindsight for you and personally I’m usually of the opinion to get out of London ASAP in case the situation gets worse.

Condolences to family and friends of the poor soul who lost their life and the driver and other people affected by this.

So, what was causing the odd working on the WCML north of MKC this morning from about 11:30am? i.e. North bound Pendolinos on the Down Slow track, and most south bound Virgin traffic being held at signals by Bradwell. At around 12:20 I saw a light diesel loco travelling south - a Thunderbird, perhaps?

Yeah, I've found that too. On a 9-car set it's not unusual for every pair of seats to be occupied [by one person] until Lichfield.

390016 was the unit involved I believe, so would have been a busy train.

As always, thoughts go out to the driver and the family of the victim.

It was towards the north of P6 but still within the confines of the platform buildings.

If this was north of the station, so not accessed from the platform, I wonder what bridge was involved? Knowing the area I can't really see how any of the three bridges north of the station could be improved to prevent access.

Is there a statistic of how many people who are struck by a train die... It must be a pretty shockingly high rate I would imagine?

The DfT's statistics aren't easy to decipher because they give a full breakdown and in some cases it's not clear if the fatality/injury involved contact with a train as you request. Looking at the update from December 2013, concerning the year 2012/13. Of trespass and suicide incidents, 277 were fatal whilst 65 lead to a major injury.

I can forward anyone on to the Excel Spreadsheet if they require. It gives statistics for 2001/02 until now on all incidents (fatal, major injury or minor injury) on railway property, categorised by passenger/workforce/public and dependent on type of incident.

As I'm sure you're all aware, this is a very sensitive topic. I think it's important to remember, though, that these aren't just numbers or statistics, and that these are all real events involving drivers, staff and people. (Not aimed at you JB25)

From what I've heard, the person stepped off the platform into the path of the train. According to forum members on WNXX, the train was busy, with a few saying that they were going to catch this train but it was that busy that they opted for different services instead.

Ryan of course I understand. I only ask because it seems an almost guaranteed way to kill yourself, and I just remember after a fatality last year a driver stating he didn't get why someone would jump in front of a train.

Just seemed like a bizarre comment, given if someone is intent on taking their own life, a train seems almost guaranteed.

I travelled to New Street on Wednesday, I won't say what time so no comments get misinterpreted etc, but I overheard the Train Manager and First Class Hosts saying it was a train spotter that stepped over the edge by mistake. Again, I cant say that this was the gospel truth and by no means am I saying it is what happened, but that's what it sounded like they we're saying.

In no particular order:

a) People can and do get it 'wrong' and survive. As different from many other forms of attempted suicide, survival will invariably mean loss of limbs and other serious life-long injuries. To live through it, for some, might be worse than if they had been successful.
b) It is very often a public act, witnessed by a number of innocent bystanders, young and old. It can be deeply traumatic for them and for anyone else who sees body parts or indeed for people who were on the train and didn't even see anything but just know that 'their' train killed someone.
c) It is traumatic for the driver and in some cases can be career ending or lead to short or long term psychological issues regardless as to the improved aftercare normally now provided.
d) It is an unpleasant task for the MOM, the emergency services and anyone else who has to deal with the remains.
e) It is traumatic for the relatives who have to come to terms with a violent type of death and who may well not have a body they would wish to view.
f) One suicide of this type can lead to 'copycat' type suicides.

These are just a few of the reasons that sprang to mind why a driver might suggest that they didn't 'get' why someone would want to seek to end their life under a train. With all that said though I do understand that all of the above are probably the furthest thing from someone's mind when they are so low as to be seeking to end their life. Nevertheless there are many other ways that can involve far fewer people although I doubt that someone who chooses to end their life on a railway line is really going to think it through like that. It's a great sadness for anyone involved.
