Pendolino with smashed windows

Did a bit of photoing today at Acton Bridge near Crewe and noticed a pendolino with 8 smashed windows. It was heading north around 3pm anyone have an ID of set number please. some pics taken at Acton Bridge here http://johnmorear.photoblog.org.uk/c1926103.html

I have seen a lot of these today, 390017 was one of them, had some seats taped over as well where the windows were smashed.

They've got loads of smashed windows. It's from frozen lumps of hard stuff hitting the windows.

I noticed several units with smashed windows on Tuesday. They had yellow tape over the affected windows. They're likely to be snow damaged (or at least that's what I thought).

I used to work at east ham on the 357's and could always tell when the little darlings were not at school by the way the units came into the depot with the windows smashed bless them.

I could understand the odd window being smashed by children off school but 8 in one train,dont think so

sorry but I have seen more than eight done in one go it was done by a gang while the unit was at a red signal the bt police were called the drive but the little darlings were never caught

having seen the amount of ice these things chuck up in the snow, then i wouldnt be surprised if that was the cause as seen in this video, either caused by the train itself or another passing train

If i remember correctly no windows where smashed in the Grayrigg accident. These are strong beasts. last winter Alsthom did have problems with Pendo's passing at high speed during very low tempretures with turbulance throwing up ice. It caused damage to several LM units too.

My recollection was that the only fatality at Grayrigg was caused by a window failing. Of course I could be getting my accidents mixed up.

Asked for and received this info from a Virgin driver.

Apparently the extreme cold we have had reacts with the window bonding and they have a tendency to pop out, sometimes during tilt due to the forces involved.

They are also allowed to use full line speed with the protective film as well.

It could well be caused by passing trains, especially if it's a freight train, you know how windy they are when it passes you!

Just to add to the above:

I went and had a look at the accident report, the only fatality wasn't caused by being ejected but apparently two people were however ejected from the train none the less. Also worth noting that the report does mention the impressive strength of the windows and the fact that a great many of them were intact.

They don't tilt when its icy; the ice builds up on the mechanism and disables it. One of the reasons its so slow on the WCML at the moment; 100 max and no tilt!

I've been on a train heading out of London to Stoke which had the window opposite me broken as we went along. Only the outer of the two panes shattered. No idea exactly where it was, but definitely before Milton Keynes.

That was definitely kids as we saw them at the side of the line - certainly made everyone jump!

I spent almost three hours at Euston today (yes yes its a grim place) I saw about two Pendolino's without broken windows, the rest all had a fair few, Virgin Lady only had some in the 1st section which I found amusing whilst sat in Standard. Judging by the sheer amount of smashed windows I call ice on this one, unless some areas along the WCML are now gang ruled?

Popped into the cross too, there was a 225 absolutely covered in graffiti, must've been stabled in Newcastle for a night.

Yep, they definitely would have very very strong windows. I mean look how small they are!
One thing that does amuse me though. Considering how brilliant these units are (yes really, they are), a lil bit of cold weather, and the windows pop out!! You couldnt make it up if you tried! Bless their poor lil cotton socks! Actually next, they'll be wanting cotton socks to keep their lil tootsies warm!!

I have a solution though. Why dont they try out the same windows you get on airlines. They dont pop out at cold temeratures do they? You might have a slightly larger window to look out of then!!!

This is another fine example of how the railways are contributing to the Olympic games in 2012. We should be proud of the opportunity our young people are getting to show their prowess at targeting objects with missiles.

On a VERY serious note though. If the glass is anything like that on the Eurostars then it is very thick. If the whole pane is popping out in cold weather when a train is at speed then it must be very dangerous for people or property alongside the line. If the window is indestructable then it is no use if the whole thing comes out at speed in one piece, better to have something that shatters easily !.
