What does it take to derail a train? I think i've heard of a paving slab doing it. Could one of these windows?

On a VERY serious note though. If the glass is anything like that on the Eurostars then it is very thick. If the whole pane is popping out in cold weather when a train is at speed then it must be very dangerous for people or property alongside the line. If the window is indestructable then it is no use if the whole thing comes out at speed in one piece, better to have something that shatters easily !.

It happens to all trains in cold weather, not just Pendos. Its also why most stock is limited to 100mph in cold weather, to avoid anything serious coming of this. It just seems Pendo windows are more sensitive, but 350 and Voyagers have fared equally as badly it seems from where I live.

They don't tilt when its icy; the ice builds up on the mechanism and disables it. One of the reasons its so slow on the WCML at the moment; 100 max and no tilt!

The reason Pendo's do 100 mph maximum in the snow is because that is the rule as stipulated in the VT professional driving policy.

100 mph maximum with a running brake test consisting of a 30 - 50% brake application achieving a 10 mph reduction in speed done every 3 to 5 minutes prevents the brakes freezing up.

There is no restriction on tilt working when it has snowed. So long as TASS (Tilt authorization and speed supervision) is working then the train will tilt.
