going back to City naming again, if Virgin win WC again, I wonder if we wil City of Glasgow the 2nd allocated to 054 or should I say 154?

Also, for the interested but clueless novis, what does the H3 overhall consist of and does it include an internal refresh?

I can imagine some confusion regarding Coach U, but am sure that people will get used to it.

The only thing I don't understand is why F and U have ever so slightly different interiors. U has an extra table, reducing the overall number of seats by two, whilst also increasing the number of seats with no view by two! Coach U does have slightly more luggage space, though.

My only hope is that the priority seats in these new carriages retain the extra leg room (by which I mean identical legroom to a "normal" seat on a 175!).

Am I right in thinking that Coach U is fitted with a pantograph? (Or at least has the drop well?) If so, I would imagine that this 'table' isn't actually a table and is infact a luggage bay under the panto as per Coach C where there is a column.

It doesn't have a pantograph, just an additional transformer and the drop well. There definitely is an extra table in Coach U compared to Coach F, but the reason for this layout probably is for the reason you have stated: To accomodate the additional luggage rack between seats 57-58 and 63-64 under the panto well.

So if you are in first class and do need to visit the shop at any point that is one hell of a trek through standard to get there now!!

Somewhere, not in London
Apparently the TMS built into the Cl390s is designed for 11 carriages and no more.
But HS2 won't fail, too much political capital has been commited by all involved.

It's not only the TMS, but the control systems will fall over if you need to make it any longer.

During a recent lecture at UMIST recently about Pendo lengthening, a speaker from Alstom (Chris English I think), stated that a 12 car was possible. The Baby Pendolino, if it appears would require 12 car running and also the fact there was a 18 car pendolino running about at 125 mph 2 weeks ago would suggest that the trainwires and TMS databuses would stand being lengthened.

In the case of Baby Pendos and the test with a pair of Pendos that is a case of two separate units, both drawing power, communicating whatever information is required between each other. Rather than inserting more vehicles into one unit and having to integrate it wholly into all the on-board systems. Not that I really understand all this new-fangled on-train software, mind.

Despite the fact that Pendolino's never get coupled they were fitted with electrical coupler heads and drumswitches that would allow multiple operation. All you are doing when you couple two trains through an electrical head is join up all the through train wiring (i.e PWM traction/brake signal, brake continuity and the like) and turn two trains into one.

What are the chances of someone having thought about this (and the lack of letters between F and G) and decided that coach U would be the, errm, Unreserved coach instead of coach E?

Thankfully Virgin, unlike East Coast, doesn't begrudge offering its First Class passengers food and drink on request so this is rarely necessary.

However on the weekends is it not uncommon to have to walk to the buffet to get you freebies.

What about the available letter that somewhere between G, H, J and K?

Longsight Depot is using set 390012 to integrate the displaced 10/11 car vehicles from new train 390055. This will enable Alstom engineers to perfect their integration plan and highlight any potential engineering issues, which can be resolved before integration proper starts in April.

It also allows for Longsight depot staff to practice the depot moves and processes which are required for the H3 heavy overhaul which will be taking place concurrently with the integration plan.

Starting on 10 February, the lengthened set will also undertake several test runs including to London and Scotland to test modified depot facilities and Selected Door Operation (SDO) at stations where during disruption it may be needed. The test programme covers SDO tests at Rugby on 10 February and the following day will undertake tests within the depot at Wembley, running late afternoon from Wembley to Polmadie.

On Monday 13 February it will return from Polmadie to Longsight and SDO tests will be undertaken at Macclesfield. This work will take around two weeks, following which the extra vehicles will be removed from this test set, which will then return to service as a 9-car train.

Trial runs are planned at the end of February and into early March using Pendolinos at varying speeds, with two pantographs raised. This is feasibility testing to understand the issues of running with two pantographs raised at the same time and is being done at Alstom's request. The overnight tests are between Nuneaton and Stafford.

During March, new trains 390054 and 390055 will have WiFi commissioned at and towards the end of the month will be reunited with their displaced vehicles. The third new set 390056 is due in the UK imminently and after a period of commissioning will enter service on 2 April with 390055 to be the first 11-car Pendolinos in service. 390054 will enter service as the third 11-car Pendolino by the end of the first week in April.

The final new Pendolino, 390057, is due to be delivered for testing and acceptance during the first week of April and is due to enter service at the beginning of June.

By the end of February the first four pairs of extra vehicles will be complete and are due to arrive in the UK by the second week of March, with the next four pairs of extra vehicles due around three weeks later.

31 existing sets will be strengthened to 11-car units in the order that they undergo H3 overhaul, which is being done on a mileage-based programme. The first two lengthened sets will be in service by the end of April, with further lengthened sets returning to service at the rate of one per week.

11 car Pendolinos will be renumbered into the 390/1 series, for example 390054 when restored to an 11-car train will become 390154.

Now that sounds like one of my planning reports run from my project plans! (not that i have anything to do with this project!)

Is the pretendo out covering a full diagram to cover form 390012 being used as the test bed?

The upgrade is badly needed by us cattle class passengers

Since Coach E will become reservable, I can imagine there's gonna be an almighty fuss when a Voyager is substituted in for a Pendolino and several people go looking for their seats in the First Class coach.

Someone mentioned it in another thread so it just popped up as a thought. I wouldn't though it's too common but it certainly happens.

As "Coach U" will be the unreservable coach and E will be between D and F, I would guess it will be reservable.

Last rumour I heard (and dismissed as obviously total rubbish) was that E, F & U would all be unreserved. Maybe it's actually true???

So here we are, the start of April and the roll out of 11 car Pendos!

It has been reported by the staff at Stafford Railway Station on Facebook this afternoon (post 12 midday!) that the first units to enter service will be 390107 and 390156 (ex 390007 and 390056) tomorrow. Sounds like the boards at some stations may display the lengths for passengers.

From what I have seen on there, it sounds like 390156 may be on Manchester - London runs and 390107 on Birmingham - London runs
