Pendolino - Euston

Im wanting to get a Pendolino to Euston tomorrow, on account of i've never experienced the tilt etc and was wondering where they travel the fastest and where they tilt the most??

Well from my own experience as soon as you get south of rugby it speeds up and starts tilting but I can't say how much depends on the curves really but anything north of Birmingham I wouldn't know.

I've heard there's a lot of tilt North of Carlisle (although I also have never experienced it). Don't think it hits 125mph that much, though. Driving down the M74, you do see a lot of EPS speeds on the WCML, however.

hock: Pretty well known road... starts at about Carlisle joining from the M74and goes south to about Rugby. IIRC, it's the longest in the UK?

Well i'm doing: (First Class- rather expensive, but not too bad when compared with the Saver)

Preston-Glasgow Central
Glagsow Central-London Euston
London Euston-Glasgow Central
Glasgow Central-Manchester Piccadilly

all in one day, with tilt hot spots being Glasgow-Carlisle, and Rugby-Euston.

I think 4-5 hours now depending on the service you take. (A few only stop at Carlisle and Preston, but some stop almost everywhere).

max speed for a 390 is 125mph on sections equipped with TASS (the tilt control system) these areas can be identified by the yellow background circular permenant speed boards lineside (letters EPS above the numeric value) The whole of WCML is fitted with TASS, although not all of the route has EPS speeds (enhanced permissable speed). EPS ends around the Camden area I think, although trains arent doing 125mph there.

125mph is reached and sustained for quite long stretches especially south of Preston.

Plenty of tilting to be had on the northern stretch of the WCML especially between Carlisle & Lancaster after there the line straightens out but still has plenty of curves for the train to play with. The Lune gorge around Low Gill (where the M6 runs parallel) is my favourite part of the line.

The M6 at Preston is the oldest part of the British motorway network opening as the 'Preston by-pass' Ribble buses even ran tours around it

Is that the area, between Lockerbie and Carstairs, with the motorway on your right, when travelling northbound? (Sorry for very sketchy description!)

If so, i agree with you, and have always wondered what it would be like to go there photographing passing trains one day 8)

No; at that point the road runs parallel to the M74. Which is a beautiful strtch of line when seen from the road. Looking forward to seeing it from a train.

What about Linslade tunnel on the down? That a pretty tight reverse curve out of the station and not canted to the extent of Wolverton or Berko.

I always notice the big tilt at Berkhampstead, it's fun 8)

I wonder what it would be like for me to travel in coach K, from Glasgow to Euston, with the extra tilt/rough ride which is usually felt in coach K.. (and I assume coach A as well, at the other end of the Pendo)

Just a general note- Coach G is declassified on all Pendolino's, until the beginning of September.
Is it really true that the demand for FC is far, far smaller during this time of year, compared to normal?
Will it be so busy in FC, because of the one less carriage, that i'll have to stick to my reserved seat?

Through the Abington area there are a few sweeping S shapes up the valley - not at full speed or full tilt, but some nice action anyway.

Either a return trip to Preston or a return trip to Newcastle via Carlisle!!!... Well it's big for me I am actually looking forward to sampling a Pendo to somewhere and to finally go down the West Coast. And I'm booked to go down the much more expensive East Coast as well. Sort of "half way down" each (to York and Preston) would be quite good.

I only started out on Preston to Bristol Voyagers a few years go, before "I expaned"

I rarely spend that quantity of money in one go/trip, i'm just doing it for the pleasure of being able to do over a thousand miles in one day (My aim for this year- to do 1,000 or more miles in one day..)

It also increases my mileage total, which is exceptionally high compared to normal/previous years

Yeah, mine is high this year too (and if you look at my signature, you'll see how low it usually is!). Finding the money and, more importabtly, the time to run all around the country is just not possible for me. I've been lucky in that my current job is actually 5 days over 7, so I don't end up with only weekends for line bashing. It used to be that I only had the Sunday, which was pretty much useless for doing anything meaningful #

Before I go to uni, though, I aim to cover the Tyne Valley Line, WCML to Preston, ECML to York, WHL to Oban, and maybe some bits and bobs in the NE area as well. Also, if I got most of Glasgow done before potentially moving up to Aberdeen, it will make life a lot easier for me (no point going to Glasgow just to get the Milngavie branch covered, is there?).

Well - today didn't go as planned. Had to go to Sheffield via Kirkgate and Barnsley this morning, my train was late to Bristol - so I got off at New Street, and got a Pendolino to Lime Street. Then went over to Manchester - upto York, and back down to Leeds. Managed to see the Scarborough HST twice as well - leading power car leaving Leeds!!! ARGH!!!

Oooooh, got the Pendolino tilt as well - not to keen on it actually!!

The Lune Gorge is between Oxenholme & Penrith the M6 passes close by a little higher up on the Down side of the railway with the gorge running deep below the Up side.

Oooooh, got the Pendolino tilt as well - not to keen on it actually!!

I find the tilt more comfortable rather than not having it. Pendilino tilt isn't as bad as planes when they turn about 270 deg ready for landing, but thats a different matter. Once you've been on a pendilino while tilting about three or four times, it's a lot better
