Janedoe: People are trying to help. You came here and asked.1. I never said I used trainline. 2. On these apps it doesn't always remember. 3. I never said I have the app and I'm a frequent traveller. 4. It seems like everyone is making a big fuss out of this for a literal 2 minute journey that barely even costed £2. It's OK. I'll get things sorted. Thank everyone for your help.
I used to work in RP and often I erred believing the passenger and giving them a 2nd chance (unless I had documented evidence of frequent fare evasion, or using wrong railcard, short starting/stopping etc.) You might consider a £2 underpayment is trivial but if you multiplied that by everyone using the railway between those stations not paying £2 could cost the railway company over £2 million pounds a year.
My advice as others have suggested don't let it go to court as you have as much admitted your guilt by not having a valid travel document when challenged. (I am not a lawyer and would suggest taking specialist legal advice). In Future I would you an app that remembers the type of railcard and always read and check the details of the ticket and railcard before entering railway premises.
