Many years ago, I was with some pals travelling between Paddington & Reading & noticed a young kid whittling away the centre armrest of an IC 70 seat with a penknife.
After asking him politely to stop & getting met with the usual “what are you going to do about it”, (and some other choice words), I suggested he’d be thrown off the train.
Reply:”This train doesn’t stop until Reading”
My response:”I know-there’s the drop down window though”, pointing to the vestibule.
He quickly stopped !
I’ll add that it’s not something I’d try these days!
