Can someone give me an example of "passengers causing a disturbance"? My trains been cancelled and I have never heard that as an excuse before and was curious as to what actually a "disturbance" might be?

Could be anything from a drunk Passenger being sick all over the train or defecating in the saloon to passengers fighting or assaulting train crew etc.

I had cause to log a delay as being due to “School children smearing avocado on the seats” earlier in the year. As above, it covers a multitude of sins.

Couple of weeks ago on Merseyrail, a passenger, who just left school for the day, started kicking off on the guard over some discrepancy over a pass, police had to be called out, ended up arresting the passenger after bit of push & shove with the guard, train ended up being cancelled as did a couple of others stuck behind it.

Smearing avocado, that must've been out of Hyndland or Bearsden?

And I thought that was just a stereotype (that young people adore avocados and carry them about regularly). That didn't happen to be when a train company did a Railcard offer with an avocado did it?

....but was it just avocado, or was the avocado on toast as well.....?

South side definitely on the up....

To be fair carrying an avocado is trendy enough that most passengers would accept reasonable delay due to it being cleaned off the seat (so as not to waste any of its tasty bounty).

Avocado is a pointless thing, it tastes of nothing. Unless made into guacamole.
Aye but it looks pretty darn beautiful... Especially when pulled out of your coat pocket with your wallet...like a rich person's marrow so to speak.

some years ago on a gatwick to reading service on i think a 119 unit at the bottom off the bank to 4b at reading close to pugs hole awaiting the signal i noticed a young man perhaps 15 or 16 using the seat cussions behind the drivers cab as a urinal via the crudley cut flaps in the blinds that others had cut
now i am not a voyer at all but as i noticed his actions as a casual observation whilst using the flaps to see how well the train was loaded and how people where reacting in the short delay
any way i was quite annoyed at his action
opened the sliding door asked him to move to the wall side cussion he had just peed on as i fancied a seat away from the cab
when he sat on it i asked him to now in future use the toilet when he needs a pee and on arrival to throw the seat on the platform
the aim was punishment and embaracement propportunate to action yes summary justice but not over the top and more likley to get a fair result

Wonder if the arrest will affect his position as headmaster

That doesn't answer the question. What is the guard going to do? Say "naughty naughty, should have bought one before boarding"?

It is a deterrent so people do buy. If the guard sees a regular pattern they can pass it on to revenue inspectors who will then catch said person being reported.

It's an icebreaker for any customer service interactions and gives the crew an excuse to engage with the passengers. I've posted on here plenty of times before that if you take the 'customer service professional' position that the TOCs now espouse for their train crew then revenue protection becomes far from the only reason to carry out a ticket check.

I'm protecting revenue on a pay train if I go up to someone I've seen board. Same on a regional service if I do a full check from the origin or en route.

If I say tickets please in a general manner I'm more interested, believe it or not, in getting amongst the passengers and having a chat, offering advice and having a general awareness of what is going on in the train. Revenue protection isn't particularly high on the list.

Much better than someone having to stop me when I am hurrying through the train.

It might cause me to spot the group who've had a few too many beers, or give an old dear who is a bit worried about something later in the journey a window to ask me about it without feeling like they're interrupting me or being a pain.

Ticket checks are a very useful tool for a proactive guard.

There was a CRoss Country service delayed out of Plymouth the other weekend for this reason.
I was on the previous train out, which one very drunken angry football fan just missed.
Im betting he got on the XC, and probably had a GWR only ticket, and that was the cause.....

I think you'll find that was fighting amongst passengers at Totnes.
