An Oyster card costs £7 to obtain, though. And Network Railcard discounts can't be applied to it so it would depend what Railcard the OP has.
Crikey they've gone up again then? Think i paid £5 the last time I went out without one so got it refunded after I'd finished with it for day. I've got a few laying around at home with nominal amounts of credit on them so really should return them for refunds.
I haven't used my main oyster in over a year that has £40+ on it and is linked to my railcard. Glad it the credit doesn't expire after a year like it did on the Gautrain Goldcards.

Not sure on which RC the poster had but assumed it wasn't a network card as they'd been subject to minimum fare a it sounded like it was a weekday with the peak being mentioned.

Sorry of I'm wrong here but won't two separate peak Oyster journeys with railcard, Paddington to Liverpool £1.80 and Liverpool St to Stratford £2.20 still be cheaper than a paper ticket and no hassle about the boj?
no railcard discount on peak oyster travel, even w my 16-25 railcard during July/August! so it’s £2.80 + £3.40 - and a paper ticket is more fun anyways

Not merely have they gone up, it's now a charge rather than a deposit. You can't get it back (but you can still get back any deposit paid on a card issued before this change was made, of course).

I'd therefore suggest keeping hold of any you think you might need. Or sell them - they're worth £7 (apparently) plus whatever returnable deposit and/or credit they may have on them!

Thank you - you have just inadvertently explained how a particularly good value ticket I commuted on 25+ years ago actually comes to be valid. :D
