Crikey they've gone up again then? Think i paid £5 the last time I went out without one so got it refunded after I'd finished with it for day. I've got a few laying around at home with nominal amounts of credit on them so really should return them for refunds. An Oyster card costs £7 to obtain, though. And Network Railcard discounts can't be applied to it so it would depend what Railcard the OP has.
I haven't used my main oyster in over a year that has £40+ on it and is linked to my railcard. Glad it the credit doesn't expire after a year like it did on the Gautrain Goldcards.

Not sure on which RC the poster had but assumed it wasn't a network card as they'd been subject to minimum fare a it sounded like it was a weekday with the peak being mentioned.
