Trains after the service goes hourly are always 2 cars AFAICS, and always wedged. Why on earth do Northern persist with this? They're hardly short of stock at that time.

Isn't anyone getting left behind on the platform? If not it's because Northern aren't required to add extra capacity and don't want to fund the extra capacity themselves.

A typical commuter-belt part of north-west England
The sooner the Harrogate line is brought up to the standard of the Airedale and wharfedale lines the better.

-electrification
-signalling
-rolling stock
-service frequency

Always thought the Harrogate line was short changed in the Leeds NW electrification.

What about the elderly London Underground units carrying the special livery of the Harrogate Chamber of Commerce and Trade....or have they now gone off that most novel (<() of ideas ?

Those rammed in the aisles and vestibules and those left behind on the platform have paid enough in fares to fund one additional unit and deserve better than they got so late at night. I hope those who missed the last train to Knaresborough had taxis provided and cost Northern as that is the only way they will learn by hitting them in the balance sheet. Who is paying for the yellow 158?

Northern should have had the nounce to expect this amount of passengers with 12,000 attending the biggest event of the year in Leeds and travelling to Harrogate where thousands are staying for the finish of Stage 1 and pass through in Stage 2. Public relations disaster.

These inadequates are supposed to be running these services for our benefit. Such a blunder should see heads roll at Northern? Unlikely even after an email to the MP for Harrogate and my MP for Ripon.

There could be a new home for a few pacers running via the Halton Curve into Lime Street in 2016 and beyond!

An RAIB report in the Durham incident found they were less safe accelerating at low speeds, than cruising at 60+mph.

And they might award a Railbus contract to Optare, then go on about how under a Conservative government the trains would have been built by Siemens in Munich.

Truthfully, I wonder what a Pacer would look like had Optare built it. Would they simply use a couple of mk2 Excels with some cheapo acrylic in the corridor connection?

What would the ride quality of paces have been like if they'd been designed and built to be articulated?

The Chairman of Harrogate Chamber hadn't a clue about railways and was being fed with ideas from elsewhere. The reason he was pushing DC groundrail was that "overhead wires can't be fitted in tunnels and over viaducts" of which there are many on the Harrogate Loop. Barking. 25kv is now being assessed for CP6.

To be fair to the guy, at least in his roundabout way, he managed to get sensible electrification on the agenda.

A long overdue step IMO.

Be fair? I wouldn't **** on him if he was on fire. He does his best to block progress on reinstating Harrogate-Ripon-Northallerton. Can't understand his motive as this would give Harrogate a much better rail service than now as well as reconnecting Ripon to the system.

It is Leeds Metro who put electrification on the agenda.

Pacers aren't cleared for a lot of routes just because they've never been used on them but it doesn't mean they can't be used on them unless there's a specific problem.

A specific problem, would you like a list. :D

So how many passengers are left behind on the platform when there isn't a special event on?

Northern's planning department do underestimate demand for special events and don't seem to be able to look back at passenger figures for the last time such an event was held.

The worst example I heard about is when there was the UEFA cup final in Manchester. Northern did little to add extra seats on late trains out of Manchester and it resulted in so many people trying to cram on 142s that crews refused to take them out as they couldn't get to and open and close the cab doors. It then resulted in last trains being cancelled and Northern failing to fulfill their legal requirement of getting passengers home or putting them in hotels for the night.

With Metro Train funding extra peak time capacity on the Harrogate line I imagine Northern want them to do the same with later services before they add extra capacity.

Well it's only a problem like the train would get damaged, stuck, not be able to stop at a certain platform or have to run at a slower speed than Sprinters for an extended length of time that would prevent the train being cleared to run a service.

Squealing on sharp bends or running on jointed track doesn't seem to keep Pacers banned from lines in the North, but does in the South West!
