what?? The north gets trains that are ****!! Northern don't operate any post-privatisation trains bar 333s, same with EMT bar 222s! and just because the FGW people get a few 1980s trains it becomes a national scandal! boo-hoo...

The DafT forced these trains on the south, and its quite simply scandalous how they are allowed to do it considering that they were removed because they caused problems in in SW. Short sighted and damn right farcical. Passenger numbers in Devon warrant a fleet of new trains funded by the government. But no. Don't see why the North is complaining, they will be the ones using them in summer when they come down to the SW and trash our county!!
If that argument was used, you would be getting a lot of cascaded stock from the north as we are desperate for extra capacity. Much more desperate than the south west anyway.
The actual truth is that the South West does not spend as much money lobbying Government as the North does (and that's not just transport). The transport in the South West might not be as over-capacity as the North because in many areas it is less attractive (higher fares, worse stations, less frequent trains, etc.) but an appraisal of the area would actually reveal it is in more need of investment, due to a stronger economy and higher congestion.
no, its because the south never vote Labour anyway, so the government ignores us. In a couple of years when we kick out the most unpopular Prime Minister in history and replace him with David Cameron, then maybe we will get some decent trains back here in Tory country.

Tories actually seem a lot more concerned about green issues. I mean look at the legendary Boris Johnson!
The period 1979 - 1997 saw the biggest number of station, service & line openings or reopenings since the railway booms many years earlier.
Certaintly the Conservatives under Cameron are far more green than 'new' Labour. One party that really has it in for the railways are the Lib Dems who in many parts of the country have suggested turning railway routes into bus lanes!
