Oyster question (King's Cross)

While checking a single Oyster fare (St Margarets (London) to King's Cross) I entered King's Cross NR as opposed to the LU station. Apparently there are no fares available between St Margarets and King's Cross NR.

Out of interest, what would I be charged if I took the train from St Margarets to Vauxhall, then tube to Finsbury Park and train to King's Cross NR?

I don't think that would be a valid route as you double back.

This is strange. Although not necessarily the fastest route it's perfectly reasonable to travel St Margarets-Tottenham Hale-Finsbury Park-Kings Cross.

As long as you stay within the maximum permitted journey time and didn't exit at Vauxhall you'd be charged the St Margarets - Kings Cross fare but as we don't know what that is I don't know what you'd be charged.

I don't think that would be a valid route as you double back.

There's no problem doing this with Oyster or Contactless as long as you stay within the maximum journey time and have sufficient credit for the journey you make. The system works out the appropriate fare depending on the journey you've made. The routeing guide doesn't apply if you stay within the zones.

You would almost certainly be charged the same as the default route to Kings Cross St Pancras LU. This is one of those illogical routes (according to the fare setters). My experience is that it will be charged at the NR1-T rate for the zones used (1-4).

Similarly, both sources show fares when given origin ST MARGARETS LDN and destination LONDON KINGS X. The adult single fares using Oyster are:

Interesting. I guess they believe that once you've joined the Victoria line at Tottenham Hale/Seven Sisters you'll remain with it all the way to Kings Cross if that is your destination. In normal circumstances I'd have to say I'd agree with that belief.

Equally interesting. I think there's a degree of clustering going on here. The fares described are those to the usual London Terminal (Liv Str/Waterloo). In view of the fact that both alternatives being discussed here would involve mixed mode travel I would expect them to be more expensive.

Indeed St Margarets (Herts) to Moorgate or Old Street are indeed £9.90/£7.80.

Yes, sorry. NR1 is for those TOCs which adopted Oyster at the last minute in 2010 (mostly SE, SWT, SN, TL) but not the SE extensions to Dartford/Swanley which are in zone 8 and I call NR2. The -T signifies that the journey mixes NR with either LU or DLR.
