Other than marking the card in some way, how would the holder of a normal Oyster card establish whether a railcard discount or other personalised option had been added, making the card not legal to be transferred or lent to someone else? You could for example have more than one card in a household.

When you scan the card on a ticket vending machine (TVM) to top it up, it indicates what discounts you have.

(The photo below is of a SWR TVM, indicating my Oyster balance, and the wording 'Card Details: Retail - Adult - NR Railcard):

Yes, it took a long time but TVMs do now show what is on the card.

If a card had a railcard applied but the discount expired (and was not extended with a new one), is the card still restricted to the registered user, or does it become once again transferable?

if an Oyster card has a railcard discount added is the expiry date visible to revenue protection staff so it can be checked against the holder‘s railcard expiry date?

It's transferable again because full fares are being charged.

Yes.

Never had that problem. I have always kept the 2 card together in one of the wallets designed for Oyster cards.

I find marking the card the best way (I've a sticker with my name on my Railcard-discounted Oyster card). Tbf if I didn't have a discount I'd still be using contactless.

Similar - Post-It notes on the relevant cards in the ticket wallet. It's also a help when you need to check the tap records and charges on the website or app to give them the same name as on the sticker/note.
