They have been replacing an underbridge at Hartshill, just north of Nuneaton. Work started at close of service on Chrstmas Eve and has been ongoing since. According to the London Midland website disruption is expected until 1200. Buses are replacing trains between Rugby and Stafford.

Just the usual incomptent forward planning.

No doubt I will get marooned at Lancaster for over an hour later this morning. I only get up to see relations for the day once or twice a year, and every time the railway mucks it up.

This after "breaking the record" for track relaying in the Trent Valley over Christmas (2146 yards in a day).

(From NR BHM twitter feed).

I can see some trains are doing the Grand Junction diversion losing only 27 minutes en route, so not too bad (unless you live in the Trent Valley).

Opposite end of Nuneaton where the track laying record was set, that looked to be south of Attleborough on the bend before Bulkington.

The issue what's causing it, is what's mentioned above - the overbridge in Hartshill which is outside Nuneaton, about 5/10 miles from where the new track was laid.

Have they given a reason for the delay?
There are many factors that could cause an overun, not all come under the control of those involved in the work.

The only guaranteed way of not creating a potential delay is not to do the work but that would create problems at a later date.

I agree totally. My comment was aimed at itsonlyme who says that the railway always lets him down at this time of year, yet continues to attempt to travel by train rather than make alternative arrangements.

Would you care to expand on that? You make it sound like you're "in the know", so I'm sure that the wider audience will be interested in what went wrong.

High winds seems a probable reason for delay if the work involved lifting bridge sections by crane.
Anyone know if this was the case ?

Do we know for certain it is the Hartshill bridge that is the issue?

Gosh!
You must be such an expert since there are no details quoted as to why this has happened!!
:roll::roll:
Still, any excuse to blame the railway.

yes see http://www.coventrytelegraph.net/news/local-news/trains-cancelled-after-engineering-works-12377251

............Overunning engineering works in Nuneaton have caused delays for train passengers across the country today.
Trains have been cancelled after bad weather yesterday stopped engineers being able to finish work at a railway bridge on time.
Engineers have been working to completely replace the low bridge in Woodford Lane, Mancetter , which has been damaged after being hit by several lorries in recent weeks..................

On the 1246 Euston to Crewe which as we passing Wembley was announced to be terminating at Rugby. Now at Milton Keynes where we've been waiting 20 minutes.

Will this run over to tomorrow morning? I'm travelling down to Euston on the 0823 CRE-EUS (0747 from LIV) and could do with it being on time.

While crystal balls are in short supply, the weather in the area doesn't look bad at all so I'd be surprised if they don't get things finished today.

Edit: Looks like they're done. :)

I've just read the Virgin website and that says all lines are now open again so hopefully that's the answer to my question sorted. :)

One thing that happens every time things like this happen is that the sheer stupidity of the general public comes out on Twitter. Obviously they won't know as much as people on this forum but when someone thinks Manchester to London is run by a company with East Coast in their name I can't help but despair.

Anyway, that's slightly off topic. Glad to see the Network Rail team have rectified the overrun problem swiftly. :)

To defend the 'normals', Virgin have made a point of using common 'Virgin Trains' branding for both the east and west coast operations.

They also make the separate Twitter accounts clearly separate in name. One thing they could do is add 'West Coast' or 'WC' in the name. It's easy to get confused for the Scotland to London services if you don't look at calling points etc. but Manchester?

One has to ask oneself 'How did people manage when everything was BR?'

Maybe 'social media' has made people stupid?

Obviously the diversions via Coventry - Stechford - Soho - Wolverhampton would at least keep the longer distance services going with delays and extended journeys.

A now retired workmate told me with horror of a desperate winter possession when bridge D40 on what was then LT which carries the District and Piccadilly lines over the WR main line was planned to be replaced - it all went horribly wrong as once the old bridge went out the new one took longer than planned to go back in - and about 3 train loads of critically needed ballast froze into the wagons and had to be taken out by the shovel full involving much bad language.

Of course - who remembers Rugby a few years ago......?

I can remember Rugby being leading story on BBC News on the day it happened and remaining in bulletins for a few days thereafter. Not the best advertisement for Network Rail was that one.

Have network rail resintated the 2 slow lines first?

Might it not have been better to have reinstated one slow and one fast given the bidirectional facility on the fast lines?
