Off to Chesham tomorrow to watch the mighty Maidstone United.......

I'm an exile supporter now living in Hampshire, so make good use of my Network Railcard for Away (and Home!) games.......

Was talking to some other fans last week at home match, and were talking about meeting up before the game, they said they were planning to get to Chalfont & Latimer by Train and then jumping the tube for the last hop on the Metropolitan Line....I asked them what sort of costs they were looking at, £50 odd quid was the response.....

I said that was similar for me coming up from Havant when I looked at it last year when we played them on our famous cup run.....but I did say there was an alternative......

Home station to London - then onto the tube and doing it all that way.........rail fare to London £25 ish (no railcards)...and then £4.80 each way tappy tappy on the tube......

Why is there such a difference - is it to fleece the uneducated?

If you are taking about coming up from Havant to London, the only way to get £25ish return fares is to go via Three Bridges. If you go via Guildford, the fares to London and Chesham are more in scale, although it would still be cheaper to split in London.

There isn't a through fare from Havant to Chesham which is priced for the cheaper routeing. Moreover, Chiltern Railways set the fares from Hampshire to Chesham via London and have a different, less comprehensive, range of tickets from Southern and SWR.

Yes - there is a fare difference between doing SWR or Southern - agreed. As this weekend from Havant the journey times into Waterloo / Victoria are similar - I'm doing the Three Bridges route (with my NR it's down to £16 for the journey into London. Tube times are similar (within a minute or two) according to TFL planner for the bit to Chesham.....

The itinerary needs to fall out just right given the hourly frequency on Chiltern and half hourly on the Met.

My fall back would be Jubilee to Finchley Road for cross platform interchange with the Met.

Where are your £50 friends travelling from?
From Maidstone.....think they are into London then onto the tube as early as possible.....they've realised the same as me.....

Like is said it's trying to fall into frequencies

There's a significant degree of rounding up going on there - an Off Peak Day Return from Maidstone East/West to Chesham is £39.00.

Am I the only person who thought that Open Train Times was going to start charging for access!
