Given how many more services run in and out of Waterloo since the mid 80s, could the equipment be starting to reach life expired sooner then was envisaged when it was installed?

Plus Waterloo box went around 1990.

Not all interlockings have a life this long - it ranges from 130 years (and counting) down to 22 years for a CBI/IECC.

I agree with that. Computer based equipment tends to go obsolete more quickly today, although often if a CBI gets renewed it's just the central cubicles that are replaced, with the external cabinets, cabling and trackside objects of the earlier scheme retained. Later CBI models were designed specifically to be compatible with older SSI data links and TFMs to allow this. Old mechanical interlockings are a bit like Triggers broom with pretty much every part except the major frame structure and levers having been changed and modified many times over their life, additional electrical controls and indications being added periodically too.

Disruption between Vauxhall and London Waterloo expected until 10:30

A track circuit failure between Vauxhall and London Waterloo is causing some lines to be blocked. Train services running to and from these stations may be cancelled, delayed or revised. Disruption is expected until 10:30 12/09.

What South Western Railway are doing about it:
South Western Railway's control centre has received reports of a track circuit failure at London Waterloo, meaning that trains are unable to use Platforms 2-4 at London Waterloo. This will affect the suburban services.
A track circuit is part of the method that their signallers use in order to detect the presence of trains on the track. Engineers are currently on site and trying to rectify the problem. Whilst engineers are working trains are unable to access platforms 2-4.
Services will therefore be delayed, and some may be subject to short notice alterations starting and terminating away from their booked stations.

Then surely it is a case of managing expectations. Did Network Rail/SWT/SWR tell passengers that they might experience weeks of problems after the blockade as the infrastructure beds in? I think we all know the answer to that.

You make a good point there.

Anyway not all the problems have been at Waterloo. A reasonable number away from there.

Still we must accept such problems away from Waterloo for some years yet. At least I'd be surprised of we didn't. I'm not an expert, just my view based on past experiences of travelling.

Just wait until they want to install the extra tracks from Hampton Court junction upwards to Wimbledon, then you will disruption on a much grander scale.

Hopefully I'll be retired by the time that happens.
