OHL Problem in the Doncaster area (23/11)

destroys the carbons in the pan heads. Was there a frost in Donny this morning?

There is (what I would class as) severe arcing as trains pass, at line speed, the overhead structure I can see from my lounge, so much so that of an evening the arcing will light up the room. I'm surprised this hasn't been looked at yet if it can create problems

saw one coming down stoke bank the other week with sparks flying everywhere (no OHLE damage) so that might be one loco needing pantograph repairs

It seems that this issue has also caused problems for Hull Trains. It’s the reason they have given for another cancellation. It’s a shame for them as they were starting to get back to normal.

They used to run an old class 86 south of York as an ice breaker for the overheads , I suspect today's issue (reported as a fire) . was not just ice conditions. Bad news for a Friday -especially on such on a key section of line.

Thanks. It was just that I got the impression that they were running through on platform 1. That will not have been the case.

So why were southbounds not stopping at Doncaster?

It was mentioned above that the issue was with a stanchion, which was presumably on the route into platforms 1 and 3, but did not affect the up fast. So platforms 1 and 3 were blocked to electric traction and some southbound electric services were given not to stop orders so they could use the up fast.

Other than delays this should have no effect on Hull as the issue was for electric traction only. Interesting that RTT shows Hull cancellations yesterday as due to a train fault - the 1033 off Hull got as far as Doncaster and terminated there (train fault as cause showing). If Hull gave the reason as the overhead line problem then they are at best being economical with the truth, and at worst it’s an outright lie.

My apologies, there was a hint of sarcasm in my post. I was of course aware that it wasn’t directly related however they had replied to multiple people suggesting the cause was the OHLE at Doncaster which is disappointing as it shows how they run their company so you’re absolutely right.

Was at Doncaster yesterday. Arrived to heavy mist which turned to fog. No frost. Saw all the disruption kicking off. 91119 needed dragging by 67018 from south of the station which it then dragged north. 91111 was in platform 3 for a good couple of hours until the problem was sorted, then it took an additional service to Kings Cross.
In the morning before it kicked off I noticed when 90029 headed off to Leeds that it pantograph was sparking like mad when departing from platform 4. Didn’t see a 91 doing this.

The video I saw appeared to show very heavy arcing across a section insulator with bits of molten metal dripping off it...

I actually witnessed it (albeit from a distance) - it was almost like ball lightning or very heavy welding.
