There are four different Off-Peak Singles for London - Aberystwyth.

That said, they all seem to have restriction VM.

No afternoon restriction from Euston it would appear.

Perhaps somebody would like to inform the Rail Executive Team over at DfT over restriction VM being non compliant with fares regulation?

I was off the opinion that Break of Journey has to be permitted on protected SVR routes like this? Barring BoJ on the return/both legs in this case is surely not correct?

BoJ is not restricted on the return leg.

The restriction is listed under the outward part only.

Not on BRFares or Avantix Traveller!

RETURN TRAVEL:
Not valid on trains timed to
ARRIVE:

London Euston: after 0429
until 1000;

Milton Keynes Central: after
0429 until 1000;

Watford Junction: after 0429
1020.

Reading: before 0940

London Marylebone after 0429
until 1000;

London Paddington before 1010;

Break of journey is not
permitted

Even at http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/times_fares/ticket_types/64172.aspx

The break of journey restriction could be said to apply to both legs, as it isn't specifically in either column IMO.

Hmm, I see. Maybe they misplaced the line in the restriction text.

I don't think there is a problem on the NRE website, as that is shown specifically against the first column, but clarity could be improved if shown at the start of the column rather than the end.

Probably worth alerting Virgin to it so it can be changed.

In fact, the restriction text for the fare in the opposite direction is correct, so probably just an error rather than anything sinister. Someone probably missed out a few words when copying over that sentence.

Or maybe it dates back to the period immediately after simplification, when break of journey on the return part of an Off Peak *could* be barred.

More likely to be a simple mistake when copying and pasting, as I suspect the same restrictions apply (but with outward and return reversed) for tickets in the other direction.

I stand to be corrected if I am mistaken, but, as I recall it, BoJ could never *validly* be barred on the return portion of Off-Peak Returns.

It is true that some TOCs did it anyway for a time, in much the same way that some TOCs imposed impermissible evening peak restrictions on regulated SVRs from non-London stations until the DfT belatedly got involved.

I'm pretty sure it could, even if it was not intentional, and that the ticket T&Cs changed such that it no longer could.

It's understandable why TOCs don't like BoJ - it allows multiple reuse when not checked. That's one reason why I think "compostage" as the French do has some weight - in my view it'd be better for passengers if both parts of a return were valid one month, but you have to stamp it yourself on each leg and then it becomes valid for two days with one overnight BoJ if desired. Multiple overnight BoJs are very much a niche thing.

The ticket involved was a single so break of journey on return is irrelevant. :)
